View Full Version : Scoping A Swede

I have a 1906 Swede M96 all numbers matching, tack driver, bent bolt in very near NIB condition. This is the sweetest shooting rifle I've ever fired. I want to scope it, but not drill it. My eyes aren't 25 any more. I do not want an LER. Does anybody NOW make a "cantilever" type mount that fits on the front sight and "cants' over the receiver for a normal eye relief scope to be mounted? I know about the SK "claw" mount but that requires stock mods. Weaver makes the number 1 mount that requires drilling the left side of the receiver. BTW, this is a super scope mount for a SKS. I did put this on mine and you can remove the scope while leaving the base on and take the rifle apart for cleaning and it will return to zero when bolted up again. It also mounts low for good cheek weld.
I really don't want to modify the Swede rifle from it's original condition. Any suggestions?

Haven't heard of any cantilever mounts for the 96. You might try the LER scout scope idea. I didn't think I'd like it at first either but it grows on you quick. It will take a little getting used to but I like 'em alright.

Buy yourself another Swede that isn't so nice and scope it.

TRy over at swissrifles.com(I think). There are a couple of mounts available that mount on the side without drilling. I can't remember the mfg.

0007, the new Bond, James Bond? Thx for the link, unfortunately, they won't do it either. Seems they mount on the right side and will interfere with the bolt. I could get a LER mount (SK) and modify it by putting a long rail on top of it so it does "cant" over the receiver. However, I believe that would put the scope to high. I've been considering that for a time lately. Anybody here have a milling machine and would like to explore making a new one piece mount for the Swede? Or a front sight drilled/tapped for the long rail? I have a vision in my head of a one piece mount cantilevered back over the receiver to allow normal eye relief scopes to be mounted w/o any drilling. I'm thinking "simple" here. No curves or radius. Just a simple pin/bolt on and go. Reuse the front sight pin (to anchor the front and remove the small rear screw that held the mount in place for the solder job and screw down the back side to hold it firmly. A Swede doesn't have the type of recoil that would knock a scope off center. I'm in Houston, Texas and will finance the endeavor. Perhaps we can make some money on this. Any takers?

Jeez, I hate it when I remember enough to be only useless!
Anyway, there's a company called (I think) Iron Eagle and they make steel, cantilever scope bases that bolt on to the Mauser rear sight, extend over the receiver. An old steel Weaver scope would work well as they tend to have a pretty generous eye relief. Cost about $85.00 and I know they advertise in Shotgun news. Don't know if they make one for a Swede rifle.

Check with B-Square or some of these outfits that make mounts that replace the rear sights.
Check with Smith Ent. also.
Thanks D.
