View Full Version : Why do you love the 1911?

Its looking a bit slow in here so I figured I would try to start a thread that generates good responses and traffic.

Imagine you are talking to another gun nut and the subject of "my cold dead hands" handguns comes up. If you were seriously in a position to own and shoot only one platform as far as pistol type and caliber and we will assume since this is a 1911 specific forum that you pick .a 1911 pistol in .45 ACP....explain why.

My reasons:

It fits my hand better then any other pistol I have ever owned or shot.
I shoot my 1911 very well day in and day out.
I have complete faith in the .45 ACP as having the power to drop an assailant.
I feel that the 1911 is exceptionally dependable and will go bang when I pull the trigger, every time.
I love history and think that it is JMB's masterpiece, apologies to Hi Power fans.

OK guys...your turn...

Because all-steel guns will last longer than steel+plastic and/or plastic.
Because my son can inherit it and shoot it for another generation. And his son after.
Because it is narrow, and fits well inside a belt.
Because even though it is narrow, it's gonna smack someone if it has to.
Because the big hole up front is cool.
Because I like saying, "They don't make 'em like they used to..."
Because it's as old and cool as using a revolver to solve your problems, and conceals better.
And all the other reasons listed above (some of which overlap, no doubt).

Peace.

That and really big holes.. Big holes and lots of bleeding are always preferable.

The piece has charachter.
It exudes Joie de vivre.
It's as personal as the sort of clothes you wear. <----fixed just for Mr Haney

It's achingly pretty.

It is said that guns a merely tools.

This may be true of a glock, a sig, a Ruger...

I can see those in the sime light as a end wrench or electric drill.

But a 1911 is more like an a musical instrument. Play it well and magic happens.

It points naturally in my hand, no searching for the front sight. It's a natural extension of my hand.
It was the first pistol I ever shot. I shot my dad's Remington Rand WWII bring back when I was just a small kid.
The M1911A1 was my standard issue in the Army. I shot on brigade and divisional pistol teams with stock pistols.
It has a good big old bullet that will stop most attackers on the spot.
Recoil is mild.
It just feels right.

It goes boom every time you want it to.

You tap anyone twice (if that many) with it they don't want to play anymore.

It fits and points naturally with me.

Almost every place that sells ammuntion has 45ACP.

First off, what's an idiot scratch?

Second, the reaon I love the 1911, well, what's not to love? The design has been around almost a century, in fact, some pistols are almost 100 years old, and still fully funcional.

They can readily be rebuilt when they wear, that inclused having the slide to frame fit tighened up, big caliber, with proper care, the steel frames will out last alloy, and plastic frames.

And I agree that the platform was the base for the real work of art, the HP. The only thing that keeps the HP from being absolutley perfect, it's a 9mm, and not a .45.

Well............. Some like basic GI units and some like fully tricked out ones. A Reliable 1911 is somewhere between $400-$2000 and that is no joke.

I fall into the basic with a few add-on's and since I built it myself I have about $400 into mine.

Glockites, so that's what the Glock cult members are called. :p

Also sounds like a reference to an ancient, long dead culture.

And JMB spoke unto his faithful, "Go out, and make arguement with the Glockites, so that they may see the error of their plastic living ways, and return to the fold of the 1911".

And the faithful went out, and argued with the Glockites, that cared for steel will out last their polymeric miracle, yet, the Glockites, smitten with their love for their lightweight plastic pistols, ignored the faithful, and stuck to their heathenistic ways...

I like
1) the lines
2) the round - .45 just feels right, right amount of kick and noise on both ends
3) It points naturally
4)mine has always worked

I do want to find a DA semi auto I like. Oddly, the only sig I like is a 220, and I own a 230 and shot plent of 226 and 228. the 9mm actually "kicks" oddly to me. The grip has a weird hump in a bad place on the left grip for the decocker - just uncomfortable.

I am thinking of a glock 23 for my next piece.

The Beretta 96D is ok, but kinda big IMO. The 92FS is ok by me.

I like the CZ97B - it feels and shoots GREAT! but it still isn't a 1911.

The Browning HP is pretty cool, but the top end feels oddly light in the hand.

Just my observations as to why the 1911 is the best compromise I've found.

My first was a Norinco 1911A1 - traded it for a 1991. Still ok with making that move, but some would argue....

I just bought a SpringField GI model and like it more than the compact USP i had before for a few reasons.

1. its slimmer fits my hand much better
2.seems to shoot smoother without the muzzel flip that the compact had
3. can actually hit shit with it unlike the USP compact
4. the trigger is worlds better than the Compact
5. so far just as reliable as the compact
6. all metal not plasticy like the USP
7. looks a hell of alot nicer than the compact USP
8. points more naturally at least to me.
9. feels more balanced as well

Luv it cuz it's a blunderbuss with tacticool whammy flair. Reliabilty is No. 1 priority. When done right, the full size 1911 eats all kinds of ammo with nary a burp. But...in my experience shortened 1911 frames and slides give it hiccups and indigestion. I have had to give up on three short frame Colts. Uber tight fitting (read Les Baers) will make it colicky. Colt rail machining can look like it was done by a drunk six year old with a ball peen hammer so watch out there (read the above again on shortened frames and slides). Ed Brown Special Forces is my latest flame. (No I can't do pics).

I love my 1911's and I am a huge John Moses Browning fan! (moses) can you tell?
That being said I recently aquired a Sig P220 with a beavertail on it and I must say it is giving my Sprinfield 1911 a run for it's money!
Less finicky on ammo, great trigger out of the box and I hate to say it but more dependable.
I am sure the aqurizing done to my 1911 has made it less dependable because it's more of a match gun but the Sig shoots just as tight a groups and is still 100% dependable.

#2: The high thumb hold on the thumb safety gives added control.

The GM has a certain mystical and mythical reputation. You would be hard pressed to go *anywhere* that a group was not impressed by the use of a .45 for any reason... "Ahhh.. a .45!" is common whenever/ wherever guns are appreciated. Now, ya might just hear that sorta response about another classic or two; but not as general or worshipful ;)

Any group of pistoleeros will have adherents to this mfgr or that; but when one of their number hauls out a Colt's, eyeballs click in review and tongues stop wagglin' in recognition of a man's man with impeccable taste and exemplary judgment.

In thirty-five-some odd years of shooting, I don't believe I've ever coma across a Colt's that didn't work... aside from those that were bugger'd and abused by some errant owner in a feeble attempt to make marginal improvement or busted for some truly strange reason.

Besides... the business end of a Colt's is about the only place where "bigger is better" always applies :D

I love the looks, the feel, the ergonomics, the reliability, the ease of disassembly/reassembly, and the fact that I can hide it easily on my person. Cheap mags are another reason. I like $5.00 mags that fit and function perfectly. I can drop them on the deck during training and not give it any thought.

The only pistol that I would consider to replace my 1911s would be an H&K USP. But, the cost of the pistol and the ridiculous cost of the mags will keep me from owning one anytime soon.

I love the Sig 220SAO. But, it doesn't offer anything that I do not already have with my 1911s. Plus, the cost of the mags is excessive.

Because carrying it cocked and locked makes the namby-pamby liberal wimp-asses wet their pants.

Because it's the best handgun ever designed.

Because looking into the muzzle makes the bad guys wet THEIR pants. Trust me on that one, I know from personal experience. One guy with a Colt trumps six assholes who don't expect it. (Yep, Sam, you were right, and then some)

And as far as Glocks blowing up..............they do. I worked for a while as a Range Officer at an indoor range and saw two Glocks blow up in moderately spectacular fashion using commercial ammo.

And another +1 for heat, because Thomas Magnum carried one. And so did the Duke, when he wasn't playing a cowboy.

Don't get me wrong, I've had a love affair with guns ever since I can remember and own a whole bunch of pistols and revolvers in various calibers, but the 1911 is still, and always will be, my favorite.

And none of my 1911's has an idiot scratch on it. That comes from people who don't understand how to properly reassembe the pistol putting the slide release in wrong and gouging the frame with it.

Feels great in my hand

Accurate

.45 ACP stopping power

Practically limitless options when it comes to cutom parts and accessories

(and by the way, the Glock is my close #2 favorite pistol!)

The 1911 is just a classic, and in .45 ACP it would be my GO-TO pistol. It has got the right ergonomics, points naturally and rocks..............

My two 1911's feed everything that says .45ACP, and they are a joy to shoot.

#1 Para Ord P14-45 Limited

#2 SIG 1911 GSR Revolution Carry

The design is copied by Sig, S&W, Taurus, Kimber etc. and is the most successful design ever.

If I'll get to see JMB in heaven, I'll buy him a

Also, like a small-block Chevy, I have enough time invested into understanding how it works that I have little desire to switch to another architecture - even if that alternative provides marginally better function.

I second all these reasons and I also have a Browning Hi-Power but my go to pistol is my 1911, albeit a DAO ParaOrdnance LDA only because I don't want any crummy lawyer trying to screw me over if I shoot a criminal with a single action only pistol claiming I had a "hair trigger" on my pistol.

I keep my other single action only 1911's for target practice.

I love my 1911's because

1) they can be built anyway you want them.
2) I can conceal carry a Gov. Mod. with shorts and a t-shirt! (I'm not a big guy)

3) Accuracy counts! and big bullets!

+1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 for just about everything said in this thread. I believe in the doctrine of peace through superior firepower, and that doesn't necessarily mean throwing the most shots downrange in the shortest amount of time.

I own and shoot a lot of different guns, but when it comes time to tuck something in my belt for whatever reason it is my LW Commander that always gets the nod.

Don't let your wife/girlfriend fool you; size does matter. Not too long ago someone said " a 9mm may or may not expand, but a .45 won't shrink."

JMB always designed a gun that fits well. Nowadays it's called ergonomics and people probably make a living calling themselves an ergonomists. He just thought things through so the product could be used well.

How come my sea monkeys are all green? Where can I get the pink ones?

Good pistols with great history. I love my Springfield 1911 Operator. It has one of the best and most crisp triggers that I have used. Due to it's weight and size I do not use it for a daily CCW, however it's one of my favorites to shoot.

Tis a tale of two sisters, both of whom have great lines and reliable behaviors. Either will get the job done and I love them both. Either will drop into my pants and stay there until needed... Altho I have committed adultery with others, I have always returned to the Two Sisters. Mormons that they are, they are not jealous and share me willingly with one another. Both lie ready now for any EOTWAWKI situation and either would accompany me to Hell if asked.
The 1911 is easy to work on and Ive had a few... Nice new one and chromed beaters that looked like they came from Mexico.... They all go "BANG" and as someone else said, Nothing says "serious" like the rackin of that slide. They are the benchmark of pistol shooting one hundred years later... The 1911 impressed me the first time I fired one. They still impress me. Power, good looks, well-built, easy to reload for..... made for a man...

I currently own two 1911's, a Para Ord P14-45 and a SIG 1911 Carry.

I love them because they are great shooters.

The 1911 is THE GUN !

Not too much comes close, maybe a Browning HiPower.

Ive only owned two 1911's and they were both Taurus PT's--very nice and accurate..I've shot my brother Colt Commander and would like that as a carry gun!
I just saw another Taurus PT and it was $569--still reasonably priced so we'll see whenever I am in the market for another pistol

At first my Springfield wouldn't shoot for the life of me. I sent it back to Spring field, told them the problem and within two weeks was back in my hands ready for duty. Slide was tight, barrel was replased with an operaters barrel, there was even a barrel bushing hand fitted which was stainless steal. Now I can use her with great accuracy under HB218. This is not to say that I'd turn up my nose to a Hi-Power either.

By the way, what are the prices like for a Browning Hi-Power these day. I mean one that is generic like what SOG sometimes carried on a mission across the fence?

Thanks guys a head of time:) :) :) :)

Not that I want to be picky, but Heat can't get a Series 70 Colt Commander..................because there is no such thing. What made a Colt Series 70 a Series 70 was the collet bushing at the muzzle, and Colt never used the collet bushing in the Commanders. You could get a Lightweight Commander with an aluminum frame or you could get a Combat Commander with a steel frame, but both of them had solid barrel bushings, not the Series 70 collet bushing. You can get a Series 80 Commander, but there never was a Series 70 Commander. That said, I love the pre-Series 80 Commanders and the Series 70 Government models, and I think Heat would be delighted with any of them, just like I am.

Well you are correct on the terminology, I meant to say Series 70 COMBAT Commander, altho I believe thay made the lightweight Commanders also, or so the Colt booklets that came with the pistols say. The series "70 Combat Commander", is mentioned in many postings and articles online. I refer you to http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/history/Commander_evolution.htm
"The Sight, 1911A1 for all things 1911".
The Series 70 is prominently displayed. And Yes the Combat Commander does have a solid bushing. At least all of mine have had solid, not collet bushings. Collet bushings were disliked because they were fragile compared to the solids. The parts illustration in the Colt booklet for my 1978 Series 70 shows a solid, not collet, bushing. My present CC has a "70B" right before the serial #, and also came with a solid bushing.
A quote from the Sight "The Series 70 Colts were produced between 1970 and 1983 in Government Model and Commander sizes."
Another qoute from the Sight "Series 70 Combat Commander – produced in bluish-black metal finish and satin nickel. The satin nickel models are very rare."
Arrrgh, I traded off my satin-finished model....
Do a little research and you will find a plethora of information on the Series 70 Combat Commander.

Because you can get a used, magnificently reliable, exceedingly accurate one for under $500...
because it is a semi-auto hand cannon
Because you dont need to spend money on hollowpoints...
because even a worn out one looks regal and dignified
because even though it only hold 10 rounds with a fancy magazine, you can always club your enemy with it.
