View Full Version : 30-06 Military Mausers?

I would like to put together a military style 30-06 Mauser but I know little about 30-06 military mausers. I'm not particular about the action but would like to put on a new military profile barrel, have the metal all parked and put everthing into a nice new laminated wood stock. I'm not concerned with the economics much, I know it will not be economical.

I know some south american mausers were chambered in 30-06. I know some actions need to be notched in order to facilitate 30-06. I know new barrels are available in military profile from brownells and other places. The availability of a suitable laminate wood stock may be a limiting factor.

I do not want a sporter or light weight rifle.

I'm looking for recomendations, thanks in advance.

Norway rebarreled theirs for .30-06, IIRC. So did Colombia. Mexico manufactured one, the Modelo 1954 in .30-06.

Don't forget the Belgian M1950, manufactured for the Belgian Army by Fabrique Nationale...

These were originally chambered in .30-06.

The one that I have has the crown over large B on the top of the receiver ring, with ABL under that and 1952 under that...

It originally had an absolutely beautiful walnut stock, which was partially 'sporterized' by a previous owner (and which means that I'll eventually have to chase down an original stock)...

The barrel is about 23.5 inches, and, like the FN49s and other post-war Belgian military type guns, it has a black enamel paint over park finish...

How about one of these:

Perhaps not strictly a Mauser but definitely a Mauser style military rifle in 30.06. I was going to buy one last year or so, for $500.00 and thought it was too much - should have grabbed it as prices have just gone highr & higher.

Dave, just dont use a Yugo 48 mauser action as their is only one manufacturer that I know of that makes a stock for that action..(boyds)
Parking it sounds cool though, real utilitarian!

Did the Danes produce a Mawzer in the 1950s' in 30/06 w/ Garand type sights?

those are actually quite good little shooters--just a little pricey..not much different in price though from most pushfeeds

Brazil produced the M954 (why they didn't just say M1954 is a mystery to me). I saw a .30-06 conversion gun some years back but couldn't tell you what make it was. Too bad, it was only $80 but I was broke and the receiver had huge pits in it. Still wish I'd got it.

Norway also produced barrels in .308 NATO, and those can be found at Cope's Distributing. As for notching the receiver I guess that's up to you and the length of your particular shells. Some'll do it, some won't. Either way, keep us updated on the project. I like seeing Mausers brought back into proper condition!

Thanks for the responses fellas.

Anybody know if the new wilson military profile barrel from brownells fit the reciever threads of a peruvian, columbian or mexican actions?

Same question for the norwegian or belgian actions, should I happen to actually see one somewhere, will the brownells barrel screw right in?

I'm thinking the way to go at this is to find a german k98 action and rebarrel it, let the gunsmith worry about action mods to accomodate for the longer length 30-06 cartridge. Looks like I might be able to find a nice new military profile walnut stock but not sure about a laminate yet.

These guys mention being able to do the military gunstock and have a photo of what looks like a nice walnut K98 stock but i have yet to contact them:

http://www.gunstocks.com/

I am not sure about the madsen, looks interesting and the tanker from mitchells does too. But the short rifle light weight is not what i want.

I have a .308 Izzy mauser being put togehter right now. I bought a "rough" 7.62 Israeli mauser from century. FN belgian action. Man was it rough! Looked like it had been buried in dirt. Never did get the barrel to clean up, first time that has ever happened. The bolt was wrong, so I tried to get an izzy one from sarco. Still not sure if it was izzy or not but it is way better than the crappy bolt that came with the rifle. Got a new israeli stock from numrich, new izzy buttplate and handguard from springfield sporters and a new norwegian barrel cut down to military stepped profile from coles distributing. Cant wait to get it back....and as you can see got the itch bad for 30-06 flavor.

Thanks again fellas for your suggestions and comments.

The Argentines also had some 1909 rebarreled in 30-06 and there were some rechambered from 7.65 .

I think the deal was that some Argentine 1909 Mausers had their chambers reamed out for .30-06. This was supposedly done by some importer ?

Bad choice.
The 7.65 round the 1909 rifles were designed for used a larger .311 bullet.
.30-06 uses .308 bullets. Accuracy was a problem with the undersized projectiles of factory ammo. Although, if the owner realized the issue and handloaded, they should have made nice shooters.

Bykerhyd. I have a original 30-06 barreled 1909 complete with Argy stamps, not converted from 7.65 so they are out there.

Dave, found this one on GB. The action, bolt. trigger guard and rear sight all look to be origional military configuration. If the front sight is right, you might only need a stock.

Munster: A 7MM would work for me too! :D
Used to have one, ended up trading it for a "86" Winchester in 45-90.

Thanks Mainer. Had my eye on them.

I found that deans guns restoration also has nice new walnut or laminated k98 mauser stocks available. The laminate sure looks sweet........

That looks good, and DGR is definately a top pick for quality stuff. An old Mauser fan told me "all the good ones are gone". Think he is close to the truth there, unfortunately. Most of the Mauser stuff I see now is really bad. :(

Good luck with the project!

Venezuela used FN M30's in 30:06. I've got one, a little pitted, but an FN.

It was trashed as an 06.....law change here in 2002 left me with LOTS of 45 brass, components and reloading gear that I could no longer use for a pistol... it was an easy step from there.

Andy sure would like to see that 45acp mauser..if you get a chance.....

I missed my opportunity to score a nice brazilian mauser in 30-06, got outbid in the last seconds. Got to hunting through auctions a little too much as a result and have hurt myself looking at gorgeous stuff like this.....

yeah I know it's not 30-06 but damn.....it's beautiful.

Pictures would be nice Andy. It's always motivating to see someones finished project, especially for those of us that have a couple of unfinished projects in the works. Speaking strictly for myself, of course.
That's beautiful rifle Dave, someday he's going to regret parting with it. When I saw the bayonet that was the topper.

Your so calm and collected Munster. In contrast, I almost soiled myself when I saw the bayonet matched to the rifle!:D

I turned up all kinds of mausers by using the gun auction "ebang" search engine. I have just started to use this and it seems to really help. I'm not associated with them, I'm just sayin. Looking for a 30-06 military mauser, I used search phrases like Columbian mauser, mexican mauser, peruvian mauser, belgian mauser, brazilian mauser, Fn mauser, 30-06 mauser, etc..etc.....

www.ebang.com

Sometimes the ebang results do not accuratly match the status of the auctions they list, like the bid status and sometimes points to auctions that are ended. But overall it's been helpful. YMMV.

Well, I wasn't so calm when that bayonet scrolled on!
I'll give EBANG a try, thanks.
I do have a couple of Mauser projects in the works. A few years back I got a WWII beater with a sewer pipe barrel and the nazi swastikas peened. I got the almost black stock cleaned up and it turned out to be a nice laminated (red glue) stock with no real issues.
I found an 8mm KAR barrel at Gun Parts for $35 and when I cleaned it up it turned out to have an almost pristine bore. It's got the front and rear sights already installed, which is moot unless it headspaces TDC.
I have a WWII mauser I bought when I was 16 from a hobby smith (friend of the family) who actually brought it home from Gemany after the war. Paid $20 bucks for it. He'd sportered it but I have another 8mm barrel and bought a beautiful, laminated Russian Capture take off stock from Wolfgar (a board member), and want to bring it back to life as it was intended.
Also, SARCO had brand new, in the white 19.5 inch barrels in 7mm Mauser, military config for large ring actions. Price was right and i got one for $40 bucks and change. I ordered a "fixer" Yugo from Century for the receiver and stock. Turned out that there was nothing fixer about it except the finish which all worn off. The bore is bright and shiny with really excellent rifling. Luck of the draw i guess, shoulda bought a lottery ticket the day that one was ordered.
Now I just need an action and stock for that 7mm barrel so I think I'll take a chance on another fixer Yugo.
I have a 98 Czech action, a 1922, and plan to bring it back to life. I got it as a "fixer" from Century, it was supposed to be a Turk. It's got the Turk numbers on the rear sights, but it's maked as a Czech Brno. The barrel under the wood is pitted almost all the way through and it's just as nasty inside. The Receiver, surprisingly enough, is only suffering from very minor pitting under the woodline. I found an 8mm take off barrel at the funshow about 3years ago for $15 and plan to bring that one back to life.
Then there's the two Turks with the worst barrels I've ever seen but really nice '93/96 actions....... Oh well, so many guns and so little time.....Someday....Famous last words...

Got out to the gunsmith last weekend and then my puter took a dump....so after much anticipation here it is....not sure if the scope is going to stay, I have a Tasco Pro-Point that is more likely to end up there but you get the picture..... once it gets shot a little and I am happy with it all I will get it all parked...

If you have patience you can find one of these. It has a Century import stamp.

I passed by many a crappy Israeli mauser. All not to add 8mm to my pile
