Took my L1A1 to the range today and put about 10 rounds through it. Not
once did it cycle sufficiently to hold the bolt open or eject the spent
casing. Starting on 7, I kept closing the gas ring in an attempt to get the bolt to
function properly, all the way to fully closed and the bolt still would not eject the spent round.
Note: The ammo was 7.62 NATO Military Special Ball M118 manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Unfortunately I did not have other ammo with me to cross-check.
A couple shooting buddies who witnessed the event suspect the problem was caused by the ammo and not the rifle. They suggested that the ammo may be a lighter match loading and not sufficiently hot enough to cycle the FAL action. Has anyone out there experienced anything like this?
Incidentally, I used the same ammo in my HK91 a few weeks ago and had absolutely no problems with it in that rifle. I know the two rifles function differently, but the ammo appears to be okay otherwise.
Anyone have any ideas?
