View Full Version : Who is best for FAL builds now?

Manedwolf
August 21, 2008, 07:17
It seems to change continually as some links end up as dead sites, etc...

Who is currently a best deal for workmanship and value for a build, headspacing, test-firing, and finish like parkerizing or duracoat? :)

Some I've found:

Files member "Moses" might come along and help out here. :D

Rich at Century Gun Works. Not same as Century Arms

Derek Huffman at Azexarms

Glen Riddle at Magnum- Gunsmithing.com

Mark (Gunplumber) at arizoniaresponsesystems.com, nice work, but not sure if taking new jobs for a while.

What bugs me is when you e-mail someone to see if they will do a FAL job for you and a week later still no reply. Good, bad, or whatever, they will get no business from me. So I just ordered a new DSA. Somebody has to spend money to keep this recession at bay....

+1 - top shelf gent to deal with in all respects with the bonus that his turnaround is usually VERY rapid.

Just go to the members section under Sledgehammer, send off a PM or email and ask away !

I have had a FAL built by Gunplumber and a G3 done by AZEX. They are both absolutely top of the line and I can't say one is better than the other

Thanks! They really ought to get a website, though, I'm surprised. A sharp website says "I am serious about this business" to potential customers.

Like this one looked really pro, and I was impressed.

Don't be fooled by Sledgehammer's overalls and lack of a
website. He built me an Izzy LB that makes my friends
drool with envy everytime they see it.

That is true enough sometimes. But sometimes, one might ask, do I want "bells and whistles" on a cool website, or would I rather those resources be used to maintain a craftsman's high quality and reasonable prices; not to mention a dedication to pleasing his customers with prompt service as well. There are lot's of good 'smiths out there. And, Randy is just one of the best. Good luck with whomever you choose. Gary

There are some Very good smiths mentioned, a couple I have dealt with and been pleased....

Another certainly worth consideration is GLEN RIDDLE of MAGNUM GUNSMITHING..

http://www.magnum-gunsmithing.com/

I have had the PLEASURE of working with him on several projects and all have been great experiences..
His attention to detail is wonderful and I am ALWAYS impressed when I receive the item back... From an M1 Re -barrel to a M66 Action tune, or an AK/ROMAK to an M14 Build and everything in between...

VERY soon I will be sending him another project, my IMBEL/IMBEL build has been calling for completion and I think it's time to make it happen..
 :whiskey:

Depending on where you live and if you don't need any finish work Court in Florida is a Stand up guy and has built several FAL's for me.. His guns ALWAYS Run great and he too is one of the GOOD guys..
He is a Regular here and easy to contact...

Rich has a superb reputation as a smith and continues to crank out many wondeful builds. On top of that, he has always had a pretty nice website.

On the other hand, there are many folks out there with great websites and no talent---All hat, and no cattle, so to speak.

Personally, I send my stuff to folks who are well known in the industry, come highly recommended from peers, and whose reputation for consistent, impressive output far exceeds any expectations derived from "magical HTML".

Example being--Clark Custom Guns has one of the most half assed websites, when compared to the competition like Wilson or Nighthawk--But they are probably the best (and busiest) .45 smiths in the country, and have been that way for over half a century. Their stuff is top notch, as is their customer service.

I want to strongly recommend Glen Riddle, too. He has done 6 projects for me and I am happy with every one of them. A very friendly low key guy, he steered me clear of doing a couple of things in a way I ultimately would not have been happy with. Nothing against anyone further west, but another reason I chose him was his proximity to NH for short and inexpensive shipping. Two years ago his lead time wasn't too long although I don't know what it is now.

Not sure why that would be an issue if you already own the receiver, you own the "gun", where the law is concerned. They'll ban new receivers, if anything.

And thanks for the leads and info, everyone who posted! :)

Still comparing and deciding, will be contacting some soon with questions.
