Brought my new/used M1A home yesterday. A Springfield with a SS NM barrel and wood stock, 10 rd mag. The best I can tell it is the model MA 9822, no hood on the sight, no bedding in the stock, 4 1/2 lb trigger pull and a neutered FH.

Something between service grade and NM?

The bolt is marked with a TRW #, the trigger group is marked with a HR # and the op rod is numbered but has a SA under the #.(Springfield Armory or Springfield USA?) The sights are NM and the frount is #ed. Thats the only #s I found so far.

It was used but the extirior is 100%, no scuffs, dings, nothing. (stock could use some oil) The inside is probably 98-99%. some thinning finish on the op rod at the rod guide, light finnish thining in the reciver rails, no finnish on the follower in the mag along the ridge. If this thing has seen 40+ rounds I'd be suprised.

I hope to try it out tommarow whaile the Young ones at church. Figure 100 rounds to see what breaks, and order up 10 20 round mags next week. (gata start some were, I can see were these things can be a money pit if you let them)

If it funcions and groups (no right now repairs/upgrades) I think I may pick up a plastic GI stock for a beater and try bedding and swap out the neutered FH on princable.

I'm thinking this will be a 'Form followes function' rifle. I have/working on several FALs with a high CDI UBBER COOL factor. This needs be KISS and function, not a sub moa if it cost durability/reliability but under 2 would be exceptable. I have the Jerry K(?) .30 cal. service rifle book coming. That should arm me for a real inspection.

I shy away from breaks but the Smith seems to realy work good. Any coments? The standered FH with the Bayo lug looks right but I would prefer muzzel controal. They all look the same when your behind them.

Any other Quick easy 'gata fixes'. Any spring, pin, buffer changes up grades? I know "scrap it and buy a coustom all GI ballenced and blue printed high end in spec..." Not in my tax bracket. I'll need a second job to keep these things fed if something don't happen soon. This will be a piece at a time fix.

I love my FALs, like the AR, and can tolorate the HKs but the M1/M1A is as natural a fit as I have found in a service grade rifle. That suprised me at 6'1 and lanky most of what I have that realy fits has been modded. These are going to be an addiction, I can see that already.

Like I needed another.

Thanks

G.S.

Sounds like you did ok, mostly GI parts. Is the barrel marked. Take a look
a Dynomikes post below, I traded this one to him and it runs like a cat
on fire. Yours sounds more like a custom rifle or one that someone added
GI parts to. You should have a keeper.

Barrel is marked Springfield Inc. and addy under the op rod and NM .308 SS on the top.

My limited understanding was Springfield Inc. used some GI parts on the earlyest guns and fewer as there suplys ran out. Thats what I am reading on the form.

Some pics would help, what is the SN range that will tell you volumes about when it left their shop and how the GI parts got there.

With a SN that late I'd suspect the GI parts were added to the rifle. Springfield will tell you if it left as a stripped receiver or not.

I think I may have figgured out some of the mystory. On Warbirds custom sight under the Texas M1A there is a list of Springfield Models and list the Standerd Loaded.

Go to the Springfield sight and click on loaded and the MA 9822, Wood stock w/SS barrel, GI NM trigger, GI NM sights (no hood rear).

Guess you got to read and not just look at the prity pitcures. I had read every thing else on the Springfield site but never clicked the LOADED thinking that was all the railed ninja super kill guns.

Liking it even better. Guess all thats left is the gas systom

Yep its a "loaded" model. My cousin has one just like it. Somewhere in between a standard and a nat match. Good shooters.

Nice, nice rifle! thanks for the pics. If you grow to love it half as much as I love mine you'll never part :) May you never need to use it in a hot situation, but IF you ever do, she'll be there for ya better'n a woman.

Get some real mags, some ammo and shoot her untill ya can't touch the barrel. She comes apart just about like a Garand but the op rod will most likely be a little tighter in the track on the side of the receiver. Enjoy!!
