Does anybody have a reference manual to identify the approximate build date for a S&W model 37? Serial number is 143xxx
Serial number has no dash, no letter prefix. It's a pinned barrel, serialized grip panel, black annodized frame model, w/ 1 7/8" barrel. I'm thinking late 1950's, but I could be way off.
Thanks in advance.
Is the revolver stamped "MOD-37" or "M-37" or somethng similar on the frame in the yoke cut-out? S&W began model numbers (Model 10 through Model 76, eventually) in 1957.
Supica & Nahas's "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" shows 1957 production of J frame Models 36, 37, 38, 49 and 50 to have reached s/n 125000. 1957 to 1962 went from 125000 to about 295000.
I would estimate your gun was shipped about 1958-1959.
You can call S&W's customer service 800 number and they will look it up for you.

It's stamped MOD-37. '58-'59 don't make it a youngster, but does confirm that I can make a pretty fair guess.
S&W said they've got an 8-12 week backlog of info requests, but I'll request a letter from them anyway, since it is such a beauty. No need to rush.
I appreciate the research help.
I purchased a very nice 29-3 several years ago. I called S&W and a customer service guy gave me DOB, researched any safety issues and a provided a recommendation regarding max bullet weight. I was quite impressed!
