State affiliate bucks national stance, supporting the right to bear arms

CARSON CITY — Everyone loves guns in Nevada. Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association, Republicans, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ...

Wait. The ACLU?

The Nevada ACLU has declared its support for an individual’s right to bear arms, apparently making it the first state affiliate in the nation to buck the national organization’s position on the Second Amendment.

The state board of directors reached the decision this month after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects the rights of individuals to own handguns.

“The Nevada ACLU respects the individual’s right to bear arms subject to constitutionally permissible regulations,” a statement on the organization’s Web site said. “The ACLU of Nevada will defend this right as it defends other constitutional rights.”

I'm glad to see that the Nevada ACLU is taking this stance...

I'm a little concerned about what's in red, but the statement is certainly better than what we're heard form the ACLU in the past...

The constitutionally permissible regulations are right there for all to see:

"shall not be infringed"

Trouble is, a lot of politicians have no concept of what "infringed" means. :|

Wonder if this isn't some ploy for recruiting more members for the ACLU. Didn't seem to stand up for the issue until after the SCOTUS made their decision. But I could be mistaken.

Maybe some livberals *can* read after all? Always thought it odd the ACLU just skipped over the 2nd Ammendment. I am still leary of those liberals but lets see how this plays out.

The Heller decision, and the ACLU's national leadership's stance in rejecting the outcome, has created a rift inside the ACLU. A big number of now former members have resigned in disgust.

They felt that they used to be able to hold their own in arguments with gun owners, saying that the ACLU was only backing the law within the "collective rights" view of the second amendment. Now they don't have a leg to stand on. This is the only time that the ACLU has simply said that SCOTUS is wrong - as if the law is not affected by a supreme court decision.

I think this is good to see that some local ACLU groups are essentially defecting from the national organization's stance on this. I hope that more follow their lead.
