well the good news first now damage as far as I can see. Using pmp in my 308 barreled Garand. I fired several clips through and was on my last of 5 before heading out. Now usually I have to tap the charging handle to chamber the first round, I tapped it a little harder than usual and BAM (yes pointed down range). The first round fired and the shell was ejected, strangely the next round was not chambered. The next 7 rounds functioned fine after a quick field strip and inspection. Now I have been aware for some time that hardened primers for a garand are a good thing but have been using regular for years without issue. What should I be checking to insure that this thing is good to go after this?

is there one in the original bolt design? as I understand it is a free floating pin.

I'm guessing that was meant as a joke because there is no firing pin spring in the M1 Garand...

However, you might make sure that the firing pin is still in one piece and that there isn't any piece of crap in the firing pin 'channel' that might have interfered with the firing pin travel...

A pipe cleaner dunked in CLP oughta clean her out good. Dry it out with another and put A drop of oil in there to keep things slick.

Are you talking military surplus or PMP commercial? PMP commercial is some of the hottest 308 you will find, not sure I would shot it through a semi-auto.

hagar, do you know if the PMP commercial .308 Win. is known to have a softer than normal (compared to military production) primer?

I haven't heard anything about that for South African stuff, but it's common for other ammo...

Know anybody with a "firing pin protrusion gage"? The part no. is 41-G-182-350.
I found one in a bin of parts once, but of course it was rusted beyond use. For $2.00 shoulda bought it for an interesting doodad.

If you have a method to measure, the tip should protrude between min. 0.044" and max.0.059" with the firing pin in the forward position. I have a RCBS Case Master and the dial indicator works pretty good for this.

I'd also take a close look at the tip to see if it is smooth and round. A buddy bought a pretty good WRA Garand for $75, but it pierced primers because of a corroded firing pin.

PMP = Korean?

All this discussion is good.

But, we have ONE ROUND that slam fired.

It only takes ONE HIGH PRIMER to have one slam fire in a Garand.
Especially if we are talking COMMERCIAL PRIMERS.

I've seen a few Garand slam-fires.
It happens.

I think the "solution" is to find a way to close that Garand bolt with a little less gusto.

I agree that this 'solution' will solve most of these problems...

I used to own a 308 NM M1 that had been modified with a firing pin spring. It was very accurate and fun to shoot. One of the few pieces I have parted with over the years that I miss.

I have had my M1A "double" several times using PMP ammo. Also did it once using Prvi Partisan 168 gr Match....
