OOPS, plum forgot about this forum and should have put this here first..
Last couple times I had one of my M1's out it seemed a Bit OFF??
Can't describe it really as functionally it worked every trigger pull..
However working the Op-rod (Binding), Loading the En-blocks, (not releasing without a Bump) and my Groups seemed all "OFF".... Rear sight was also NOT clicking nice and solid, kinda half clicks almost mushy for lack of a better term..
Fast forward to tonight, I needed some chill (Rum & Coke) time in the Garage after my day and decided to pull the M1 out and take a Look to see if I could find anything...
I took the rear sight apart, checked everything over put it back together and noted no real change? Check receiver grooves and they are all nice and sharp, check the Little Pointy thing on the Sight and it looks perfect? Went inside my parts stash grabbed another sight assy and slapped it on.. This time things worked better with positive clicks and normal operation? This gets me thinking what I did differently with that assy so I grab a copy of my GCA magazine they sent awhile back with an article on the Rear sight assembly.. Everything on BOTH my sights appear correct and then I noted that I had tightened up the WINDAGE side screw a Little more the second time so I wonder "IF" that was the diff?
Well that was it, I assembled the original sight added a Bit of grease to the Inside (Pinion I think?) checked everything out and she is working great.. Nice solid clicks and NO movement when I extend the sight and push down firmly..
Looks like ONE prob solved and I wonder if that may help my Groups next trip?
While I have it out I decide to look into the Binding of the Op-Rod? I remove the stock, unhook the Follower rod and remove the Recoil spring from inside the Op-rod.. Spring looks kinda rough and old with some schmeg on it so I want a Better look.. Out comes the spring but damn it's SHORT?? WTF I say and look close enough to see a Shiny end on one of the Coils.. This FUCKERISBROKE I say, and whatya know the other half of the spring is still inside the Op-rod.. I fish it out, clean the inside of the Op-rod all purdy and then think OH HELL, do I have a recoil spring??
Well sumbitch not only do I have One but I find TWO!!! One New GI the other a NIW Falcon Spring... Ha I'm happy now...
I grease up the Places I remember I'm posed to grease slap her back together and she is a HAPPY M1 AGAIN...
Nice and smooth, bolt relasing so much better I "ALMOST" Gave myself an M1 Thumb working the action.. NOW I can't wait to try some of the GREEK and my Handloads again in this baby, hope I can go this weekend if not sooner...
Soooo in Closing is there any chance that the Broken Recoild spring cpuld affect "ACCURACY"? Not making excuses just wundrin is all...
I am also surprised that the Gun functioned with the broke spring, says a LOT for the Gun ifya ask me...
