A question for you New Yorkers. I know that NYS retained the AWB but wonder if possession of them is illegal. For instance, I live in NH where there is no AWB and I can happily own semi autos with flash hiders and bayonet lugs and then I decide to move to NYS. Does New York law prohibit me from owning them or just prohibit the sale of firearms with "evil" features? What about if I were to visit the state and took a flash suppressor/bayo lug equipped semi auto? Would I be at risk of arrest? I know that Massachusetts retained the law as well but if I chose to move there, I can legally bring "assault weapons" with me since they are my personal property and were not purchased there. Is NY the same? Thanks!

Possession is death, unless they are pre-ban weapons, and it can be proven...

Do not have any extra parts lying around that you could construct a banned weapon from... threaded bbls are proof of intent to construct....do not have any fire control parts around that are not semi only.....I am not sure that legally you can even make a homemade weapon from an AK flat here, despite Federal law that allows you to do so.....

What, are you smoking crack? Stay the hell away from New York..you dumb or something?
Seriously..stay out of those states with your gear..your ass may just end up in prison.
Know of two guys that were sent to the slam in California for possession of hi-cap magazines...got pulled over by CHP and the dummies were just coming from the range..2 mags each, 5 yrs for each mag in the state pin..white guys, hispanic and black prison population largely..you figure out the rest..
Stay in Vermont..dont be tempted by a few extra bucks in your pay-check..it aint worth it!

With the higher taxes and tolls it would be a pay cut anyways

While I asked the question because somebody else asked me and I wanted to be sure I gave them the right information, I did grow up in upstate NY and have family there and sometimes think about returning. The hunting is excellent, I have lots of friends there and my sister keeps bugging me to come home and help her take care of my aging parents. And I do go there about 3-4 times a year and it is always good to know what I can take with me and what I can't. Does anybody have a link they can post with NYS firearms laws?

Looks like you're out of luck unless your "assault weapons" were built prior to '94.

Guess that spells it out pretty clearly. So I can't take my FAL's or AK's to NY. I do have an older AR - one that I bought in 1989 so I guess that one is okay.
I didn't realize it was that bad there while I knew that I could never bring a handgun. Looks like the 870 with the collapsable stock and pistol grip that I shot two deer with last year may have been contraband. Whoops.

Its sucks, if I want to return to California to visit I have an old yugo Mauser to carry, that and a couple bandoleers of 8mm is about all I feen comfortable carrying in that state--in and out in 24 hrs!

Remember, an 870 is not a semi-auto and may have different restrictions.

No restrictions on pump guns, except for capacity while hunting.

Handguns are a nono without a NYS permit. No out of state permits honored. Leave them home.

For rifles, if it was legal under the Fed AWB, its legal in NYS. Preban guns are good to go, postban guns can only have one evil feature.
