View Full Version : This FAL just dont like to feed Ammo
This has been an ongoing problem..today at the range, 4 different mags..commercial and Aussie ammo---shoot 2-3 rds, sometimes 5-6..last round ejects, rifle fails to feed rd, gets stuck roughly halfway..have to remove mag, that round drops out, bent useless..I am pissed!
any ideas? Im ready to sell this thing, have had it to a smith..he scratches his head..I cant afford to start sending this thing all over the country..its an Entreprise STG 58 so many smiths wont touch it

Can't tell much from the pic, too fuzzy, like most of mine. Assume you have polished the feed rails?
Have you tried giving it more gas?
The one and only ggiilliiee had a thread on receiver rails. Not recommending you do it but you may find some info that would help.
ggiilliiee's Rail Widening Page (http://community-1.webtv.net/ggiilliiee/GGIILLIIEESRAIL/index.html)
MANY posts here on this topic, do a search (http://www.falfiles.com/forums/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=1361533&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending).

Entreprise ejector block is probably mis-located.
This makes the mag sit low and/or too far to the rear.
Sometimes helps to weld-up the mag-catch lever to force the mag to sit higher and more-far forward.
Whittling/Widening the rails on an Entreprise receiver will show more promising results AFTER you get the magazine in the proper location.

What about sending it back to Entreprise..will they stand behind their product even though I am not the original owner? I am reluctant to start chopping away at this thing without a clear idea as to what is causing the problem.also, can I jut shoot the FAL with the dust cover removed and when the round hangs up I can see more clearly the cause?
thanks, Jason
From the gouges and dents and actual bends in the cases, looks to me like the bolt is riding over the ammo - I would check out W.E.G.s suggestion first.
Almost forgot - also have a look at the bottom-edge of the bolt-face and see if it's square or worn round, which might be another reason it's not picking up the base of the round cleanly.

Its rounded around the bottom, as if worn

yep cheapest easiest fix is try a different bolt that is not worn in that area.
any sources for just the bolt? price..availability etc

If you send it back to Entreprise, they most likely will want you to pay shipping both ways.
The rounded edge of the bolt certainly doesn't help matters.
GPG still has bolts heapy-cheapy.

Brad has "complete" bolt for $35
Gunparts guy has a stripped metric in xcellent cond for $9.99 or $ 7.99 used, but you already have a used one.

10 bucks is cheap enough, but I'd give Entreprise a jingle or e-mail and let them have a chance of making it right.

guys are rite ...make sure all is well before you gillify ...he....but looking at those rails ..i see no hour glass profile at all !!!...looks like ya need a claw hammer to get a round out of that one ...no offense .....
....when ya still have shredding of mr bullet/no feed after the new bolt ..(98.77245% sure ya will)..then check the website ...i think your gonna need it on that one .....:)
A big THANK YOU to all for these great links...Now I know where to 'start' to resolve this issue..guess next step after a bolt may be a dremel to pave the way for Mr Bullet

If he changes the bolt, then does he not have to worry for headspace as well?

i had a imbel kit gun that would do that on rounds feeding from the left side of mag, turned out that the lower left corner of the bolt was rounded off. a new bolt from DSA, check headspace it was still good and (sucess). that was 2000 rds ago it runs fine now.
thanks guys..I ordered the new bolt today form gunpartsguy for $45ish..already talked to my smith, when this thing is in I will take it back to the range..by the way, are dremels battery operated? If so I will get one and take that as well..if needed I can dremel away until the thing feeds properly (gilifying a little at a time ofcourse;) )

ggiilliiee-ify a very little bit at a time.
IIRC a guy here took too much off pretty recently, and the bolt would fall through the rails.
I've done it on a couple of rifles, and they work great. Just remember that you can always take more off...
Peace.

Well, I found this thread a little too late, but yes, we would take it back and repair it even though you are not the original owner. The repairs (whatever they may be) would cost you nothing, and it would fall under our "Lifetime Warranty."
But you would, unfortunately, have to pay for shipping. Let me know if the new bolt doesn't fix the problem, because it could very well be that the mag is not seating properly, or the feed ramps need work.

Thanks Matt, if this new bolt doesnt fix the problem I will contact you, thanks for the offer..I dont want to start hacking away and jack things up.its been the only problem Ive really had..very accurate rifle and nice finish as well
Update: For those interested..received new bolt today from gunpartsguy (FN FAL Metric Stripped bolts, assembled bolt (complete), refinished $37.99.
It did the trick, no more 'failure to feed' problems as of 80 rds fired today..only initial problem today was failure to lock up, once it did after 2 mags of ammo it started to function like it was supposed to
Hats off to gunpartsguy.com..fast delivery, great product, great price..I would recommend the website and his products..now my MBR is good to go:fal: :]

Did you check the headspacing? When you change out the bolt, you will need to check the headspacing, as each bolt is likely different. Thats probably why it wouldn't close properly at first.
Hopefully you won't need a new locking shoulder.

Congrats!!
Did you use a Dremel or lose any blood?? Ya might get some WESCOG points there. :D
Yup, check headspace. Changing a bolt on a G1 required a new Lock shoulder .006"smaller for me.
