What a good basic sharpening system for pocket and kitchen knives?

a dual-gritted diamond hone. About $17 from harbour freight, IIRC. Anything else is wasted energy, time and money on pocket knives and kitchen cutlery.
Fine blades and exquisite edged tools are another item all together ;)

+1.
I still use a stone and elbow grease occasionally, but a diamond hone stays in my bag for those quick jobs afield.

Lansky, will set the angle. 20 degrees kitchen, 25 pocket. Then use a steel.

Crock sticks. Its the only quick way I can put an edge on a knife. I had a lansky system but it was slow. I never could put an edge on using a stone or a hone.
