I'll be picking up an older Springfield Armory M1A shortly to give my Poly company. The serial number is 461XX. What year was this made? Is there a web site that lists these numbers?

johnm@springfield-armory.com told me when mine was born:
4!20!00

yours is from 'round 88 it'd seem from Different's compilation (http://www.m14firinglineforum.com/upload/showthread.php?p=44119#post44119)

Thanks for the info!! I'll be the third owner and it's still in 95%+ condition. The first owner put under 1000 down the barrel and the second owner fired under 300. I shot this rifle about ten years ago and found it more accurate than my national match M1A, which I dumped not long after that.

Picked the rifle up today and for a 20 year old rifle this thing is just about perfect! Took it apart and found the following parts:

Barrel - TRW 12-63
Bolt - TRW
Hammer - TRW
Op rod - HRA
Trigger housing - 7267030-0 (don't know who that is?)
Safety - SA

Top rifle is the Springfield and the bottom one is my Polytech.

You got a beaut! That's one of the really desirable 7.62mm marked receivers, very best of the Springers! The trigger housing is commercial from those markings.

So they're marked .308 now? Was the 7.62 marking a short run? I've owned and shot M1A's for years but never really got into too much detail on their history.

Your's was towards the end of the run. There are a fair number of them out there, just they are more desirable and IMO, and others they are the best receivers Springer made.

If i remember correctly springfield removed the 7.62 receiver heel marking in the 60K-65K serial number range.
