I heard somewhere that the South African surplus has a thin copper coating over the lead and this causes it to break apart.
If this has any truth,it could be a nice cheap hunting round.

I have shot some warthogs back in SA with my R1 service rifle, and normally total fragmentation occured in the larger ones, copper and lead fragments throughout the body cavity. Would not be my first choice for hunting, but back then (1976) I was poor, and had quite a stash of "appropriated" ex military ammo, so I used what I had.
