Will 7.62NATO penetrate this? (pic)

Place your bets,gentleman; I'm going to the range and put a Portugese FNM 7.62x51 147gr. FMJ NATO spec military surplus round (made in 1976) into this block of phone books at 200 yards with my Vepr (20.5" barrel).

The block is nice and tight and comes to 13 inches in thickness; I'll set it on the ground up against a solid support.

to give you a idea of the penetrating power of a .308, several years ago I took my issued, match conditioned M-14 to a IPSC 3-gun match. On the rifle stage someone accidently put up T-1 steel(pistol only),3/8th thick pepper popper targets at 300 yds. Burned a hole through every one.

I don't think it will have any problem. have not tried shooting 30.cal threw much but targets and game but took a auto ordnance semi thompson in 45. just playing around and shot a few rounds threw some pretty thick pine pole fence post one time and you could not drill a hole any cleaner. after that 45.cal has always been my favorite. saw a tape a few years ago about what certain ammo does. most of the fmj rifle ammo went right threw both sides of a car but man if you want some penetration try a 12ga. with slugs. went threw one side of that car and right threw the other side. did not even try to stop. there goes that ideal to build one room of my house as a bunker with the old phone books that are being replaced right now. wow!! let me know what happens.

I don't think it will, I've used phone books before (7 I think) and they were able to stop a 200gr JHP at point blank range (pistol vs rifle cartrige I know) my "money" is on the phone books (at least on the first shot). http://www.fnfal.com/forums/smile.gif


What's the BC on the 147gr .30? is it going to tumble on impact?

I don't know, I think it will be close either way.
I once thought I would use a phonebook for a a bullet stop, boy was I wrong!
My S&W 45 went right thru all 3 1/2 inches of a Tampa yellow pages and ricocheted off
a cement wall!
That was back when I was a kid and did not have the respect for firearms that I do now.

Okay,here's the results:

First,I'm proud to say that I nailed the block of phone books with my first shot two inches from dead center using the iron sights of my Vepr. In other words,I got lucky.

To reiterate,range was 200 yards,ammo was FNM 147gr.FMJ ball(1976),barrel of Vepr is 20.5".

Bullet penetrated about 10 inches before stopping (using the pic at the top of this post as a guide,bullet entered at the top and stopped just short of exiting the sixth book).

It started to tumble between 4 and 5 inches into the block. By the time it stopped it had rotated more than 90 degrees. Significant flattening occurred from the base 1/2 way up the bullet. Bullet bent considerably,cracking the jacket about a 1/3 of the way up from the base.

I'm guessing it would have easily penetrated the whole block at 100 yards.

shoot them with a soft point and
HPBT match and let us know, if you can?

I have heard that wet they will nearly match a gelatin test.?
