I thought this had been covered, but I can't find it.

I have Bolt & B/C w/ what looks like a P in an oval. I say looks like because the stamp isn't complete on either.

Pretoria?

I used to own a all original winchester M-14
wich had a P in a circle on the underside of the stock and a eagle holding a bunch of arrows is a square.

what do these marks mean?

The P is a proof mark of successful test fire.

why would they mark the wood instead of the barrel?

doesnt really make sense to me, if the rifle is ever in for a new barrel the mark would be useless.

over here the police used 30m1 carbines til the 80s or so., and they all had new barrels istalled at some point., so that would render the proofs useless.
