Hey, ya'll- I'm from The High Road, and I've got a couple of FAL questions.
My favorite dealer has an Imbel based FAL (which I understand are good receivers parts/kits) that has the Imbel markings all over it and has Pacific Armament Corporation on it, too. I have no idea as to age, but the buttstock is a little beat up (not too bad, though). The rest of the rifle looks primo, though.
He wants about $800 for it. Is this a pretty decent deal? He's had it in his safe for a good while and never got around to putting it out.
What is the usual accuracy that ya'll are getting out of similar rifles? I'm looking at this for my first big semi-auto/battle rifle, and I want something that's better than an AK variant in accuracy, yet under 1k so I can afford mags/reloading components/ammo.

Welcome to the Files.
Fal prices have shot way up since the import ban on receivers and barrels.
If the rifle is matching #s and has been professionally refinished, it would be in the $800 range. Some mags should be included for that price to (2-3). The bore should be bright and shiny also. The beat up stock leads me to think it's original, not a new US made stock, which brings up the question of 922 compliance. The rifle will need to have 7 US made parts to meet the requirements of the alphabet boys (BATF).
Accuracy is a wide open subject. 2 MOA is more than acceptable for a main battle rifle, which the FAL is. Some shoot better, some not. If you buy it, there is a ton of sharp members here who know all the tricks to get them running right. They are a user friendly rifle.
Of course, you can watch the Marketplace here for rifles.
Good Luck.

Thanks. I am going to put it on layaway this afternoon.
God, I need this rifle like I need a hole in my head, though...
But it's going to be fun...
Oh, and I'll take care of 922 compliance later, too. Won't be a problem...

Milsurp ammo is in the range of 2 moa itself and with this ammo the average Fal will generally shoot in the 3 to 4 moa range. With a good barrel and ammo some guys get 1 to 2" 100 yd groups.
Buttstocks shouldn't be hard to find at Gunthings, Gun parts guy or DSA being the most likely scources.
At $800, you will be stealing that rifle, best you get a receipt for it. :D
Good find!
Now, which one to get next?
btw: www.dsarms.com has used Steyr mags for $7.00 in excellent condition. Recommend getting a bunch.

If you mean, buy the needed parts, your price range will not work.

If you look back in 10 years, even with no economic collapse, you will be grateful you have it. Will probably be worth more than if you put the money away in savings, and give you a lot more satisfaction.
And if we do have the economic collapse predicted by some smarter people than myself, it will be priceless...

Believe me, that possible collapse is THE reason I am looking for a decent rifle. I didn't want to get something too exotic, so I was looking at AR-15s (which are still an option- mags, ammo, and parts EVERYWHERE), AKs (mags and ammo pretty available, no worry about parts, but not too great accuracy), and .308 rifles like the FAL, M1A, PTR-91, etc. I figure that it's either a FAL or an AR-15 for me, but I'm still not quite decided. I'll take a closer look at the store, though, before deciding.
I haven't given this rifle my close prepurchase inspection, so I still might not get it if it doesn't seem up to snuff.

Hi Fal'ers,
Is anyone familiar with Liberty Armoury in Liberty Texas. I am thinking of buying a PAC FZSA IMBEL gun- "Sporter"(modesto Ca). Has a funny muzzle brake on the short barrel. It was built by the above armoury.
It is called the model 444. This would be my first FN- Price $650(one mag).
Is this a decent FAL??
Thanks for your help...The new guy

I had one of those..bought in 1999 in Cali right before the ban in that state..paid $495.00(!)..also was buying Radway Green at $55/per 400 rds(!!!)
Never had a problem with that rifle..sold it, kicked thyself and replaced with another FAL before the prices REALLY started to climb...hang on to it...VERY user friendly..parts are still cheap, mags really cheap..its like a life assurance policy with the uncertain future

I don't think there's enough info here to make a judgement, and someone with more expertise will be along shortly, but here goes:
It sounds as if it is built on an Imbel receiver. Is there a 'Gear' logo behind the 'Imbel' on the receiver? The receiver itself is worth $450 if it is straight and un-buggered.
You said there is a "short barrel". How short? Is it an SBR? Short barreled FALs are sometimes unreliable - due to the gas system. I have a 15" barrel with a permanently attached fh (just over 16" total) with the gas system brass-brazed shut (full gas every round). It works every time, but I've read about guys here that have struggled with theirs.
If the rifle runs reliably, this is a great rifle for the price.
Peace.

Went and looked at it again. It does have a gear logo behing the IMBEL name. The upper and lower reciever have different numbers. It is a metric pattern. The barrel is 14 or 15 inches long with a flash suppessor of about 4 inches(British I think). I'm assuming a SBR means short barrel?? What do your think?? The rifle appeats to be in excellent shape.
Thanks Cappy:eek:

If the rifle works, and the barrel and chamber are very good, and it is an Imbel receiver, it is worth $800. If it already has the requisite number of US-made 'compliance' parts, it is a very good deal. If not, the person shouldn't be selling it as a complete rifle. If it is a dealer, they should know this.
