View Full Version : Magazines...

One of my friends just picked up a very nice Springfield Armory M14 at this weekend's gun show.
Where would be a good place to find magazines for a reasonable price?

I would check out 44mag.com first, he sells the CMI (checkmate) brand
"USGI" mags for around $30 each. While these mags are being sold to
the military under contract they are not original USGI M14 mags form Viet
Nam that were made to much tighter standards. During the AWB their were
mags being sold on Gunbroker by a guy that also has an ad in SGN, Tom
Forrest is the guy's name. He was selling what I believe to be remarked
CMI mag bodies with new Followers, Springs and Floorplates, they work
but they sometimes only hold 19 rds. These usually are marked BRW-S1
or with "high" W, that is stamped an 1 1/4" from the bottom instead of
3/4" as GI mags are. Typically if you'll get a few CMI to get started you
can find someone selling a stack of real GI mags for about what you'd pay
for fakes. Look for spine stamps KMT, UHC, W, OM, HR-R and others.

Stick with USGI. FYI, CMI is the current USGI supplier. As for what's out there otherwise, beware! There are ton's of fakes. You can pay out the nose and end up with a fake that's not worth $10.00 if you don't know what you are doing.
Here is a buying guide from another forum:
Here is a magazine ID guide from that forum:
FYI: the only non-USGI mags I have ever used and will vouch for are the Chinese mags for the Polytech and Norinco and the Type 57 from Taiwan.
Dan's, a vendor here has the Type 57 very reasonably priced. I use them for the range only to save my USGI mags. They have worked 100% reliably, and were 5 for $75 shipped.

Just noticed a near-by dealer had a 5rd M14 mag. Has no markings that I could find. I wonder if those function well. It would make bench shooting easier.

The 5 rounders function fine. They just tend to be a bit difficult to get in and out of the rifle due to it's lack of height. (getting it locked in and then getting it out of the mag well isn't as easy as a standard mag) Some people hunt with them.
Years ago, I received a 5, 10 and 20 rounder with my new standard M1A.

Dan (a files supporter) has Taiwanese M14 mags 5 for $75 shipped.
I ordered a batch. I need to order another one.

If one is patient, one will find USGI Mags at or near "imitation" prices.
Be patient, the difference between USGI and the "others" is PRICELESS!
