I don't want to have to shoot Match ammunition most of the time, only if i really want to do some target work and only if I put a scope on it. For regular work, I'd like to use something much cheaper, probably surplus ammunition. But, I want it to perform, and be something I could really use if in a bind, not plinking ammo that's lucky to shoot an 8 inch group at 100 yds..

How is

British Surplus
South African Surplus
Portugese Surplus

and anything other ones out there. I'd like to be able to buy 500 rounds for around 100 bucks. Any suggestions?

Have a good one

I'm a firm believer in the Brit Radway Green. Out of my L1A1 it will give a consistant 1.5" at 100m. At 300m I hit a 5 gallon bucket all day long. Works for me.

With the SA stuff I get shifting zero, I don't know what the deal is, probably just my particular rifle.

Never tried the Port. stuff.

I've had good luck with the British Radway Green,it functions well in my STG-58 and L1A1(CAI gun), groups well (1-2 inches at 100 yrds) very reliable. SA was hotter but accurate. Haven't tried the Port.
Hertenberg was very good in the STG, more
accurate that the RG or SA. Hard to find right now, maybe AIM has some left.
Good luck, hope this helps.

The Portugese is excellent FALfood. Also tops on my list is Hirtenberg. Radaway Green tends to be kinda dirty but there is a good supply of that stuff and it isn't bad ammo at all. Stay away from the Chilean stuff, it's evil!

Sportman's Guide 20% offer ended 05/20/01 although someone said they managed to sneak it by them after that.

I got 1000 rounds of SA for about $140 shipped across 4 zones from TWS, Inc.

Radway green de-linked gave us no mis-feeds or accuracy problems in 250 rounds the last 2 weeks out of a FN FAL (L1A1 parts gun) or M1A1 match rifle or even Savage or Ruger lightweight scout rifles...If I could get another 2000 rounds I would...even though it is surplus due to it's age

Radway Green functions fine but is a bit dirtier than others. Portuguese is fine stuff, super accurate and clean. Has anyone personally tried the 81' South Afican? :p

NO, but I've shot some '99 PMP. Very good stuff, fairly accurate, and HOT. VERY hot (but not dangerously so). Lots of fun to shoot. No, not commercial ammo.

Malaysian, Hirt then FNM

I have had good luck with all three. I shoot the PMP in .223 and it is good stuff

The Portugese FNM ammo produces great groups out of my DSA STG. The ammo is also fairly clean and functions reliably in my rifle. All of these reason combined with price and I dont think you can beat it. Malaysian and British Radway seem to function very well. S&B ammo is the onlt one I would avoid, this is mostly because it seems under powered compaired to the other stated ammos'.
