I was given 4 mags with my rifle and 2 have notches in the locking (which work in rifle) and the other two are smooth. The smooth ones do not lock in and will not work in rifle. Is this a determination whether its inch or metric? When I figure how to post pics they will be posted. There's a stamp that looks like a star just above the pistol grip on the left side. It also has the folding cocking mechanism (terminology??). Thanks for any help.

You can check out this link and review the receiver and mags . and you will see the difference in the metric and inch pattern .

Unfortunately, this can become rather convoluted. Many inch kits have been built on metric receivers, so just because the receiver is metric, doesn't mean it is a metric rifle. The folding cocking handle does suggest that it is both an inch rifle and receiver, but metric receivers can be modified to accept the folding cocking handle.
To post pictures, you'll have to have them hosted on another site, and then hit the IMG button above the text window when you are posting and paste the image code in the window that pops up.

You have an R1A1 sporter, which is an inch kit built on a metric receiver. So it is pretty much an inch rifle that takes metric magazines.

I have an R1A1 that was built on an inch rec. It will take metric mags, but they're kinda loose and dont function perfectly. The best thing is to use the mags that were make for the rec.

Man, I have a question on your pictures. Your takedown lever on the left side of your receiver is not closed. Do you fire it like that? Mine closes more than that and it jumped open on the second shot when I tried it out after getting it last week off Gunbroker.com.

This is mjalms' rifle, I just posted the pictures for him. But that is a good point. I imagine it still needs to be broken in, as mine did that for a week or so after I assembled it, but I did fiddle with it a lot.
