Help-Surplus Ammo/no function

Gents, I have some Surplus ammo that will not reliably extract nor cycle the actions of the L1A1's and SAR-8 that I have. They work fine with the Springfield Armory M1A's though. One type is in 20 round paper boxes marked "20 ROUND, 7,62x51mm BALL, FNM 80-66". The other- 20 round boxes marked "7,62x51mm, BALL, R1M1, 040,B04/81". Anyone know what I have so that I wont buy it again? What country, etc? Thanks,George

The FNM is Portuguese, the R1 is South African. It is some of the best ammo on the surplus market, so it could be your guns. Make sure the chambers are clean, no crud or brass shavings under extractors, etc. I assume you already checked out your gas selector? Turned all the way shut, no ammo will function semi-auto in them.
