I've got a regular Stg steel barrel. Is it safe to shoot tracers w/out harming the barrel?

Yes, as long as you
1- clean well and regularly
2- don't operate the weapon at its cyclic rate (650-700) on a magazine-full of tracer
Your StG is a good military barrel. Tracer will, in the long run, VERY slightly erode the bore more quickly than ball, but you probably won't be able to tell.
Tracer also will have a slighly different POI than ball. Tracer is generally used for area-fire weapons such as LMG, HMG, and AAA systems. Tanks use them exclusively (therefore a precision SABOT goes into a 24" at 1500m circle- VERY sub-MOA), and Bradleys are area-fire weapons (of the highest precision, I might add!).
