Regarding surplus ammunition availability... I just read that Israel has put it's US arms and munitions suppliers on war alert. Now just what calibers are likely to become scarce if TSHTF? Just a curiosity...

7.62mm
5.56mm
105mm MBT ammo (nah, they roll their own)
155mm SPH
120mm Mortar
yadayada- they use NATO-calibers mostly, having converted even captured Russian and bought Chinese tanks to the US/NATO M68 105mm main gun. Hell, IIRC, the Chinese sold the T59 w/ that gun mounted.

I'd be more inclined to think they buy components. They have a sophisticated small arms and large calibre ammunition system, based largely on Lyttleton (RSA) tools and US tools. They've bought from whomever, whenver, on the spot market. it's unlikely they NEED ammunition from USA, except to keep whatever minimum 'units of fire' they need available for a short time, while they convert their peace-time industries to a war footing.

Pity- they (all the war-torn inhabitants of theat region) all will destroy all those things and places they love. The old 'If I can't have it, no one, especially my enemies, can either' is a a frightening basis for an act of war.

Well, if they're gonna go at it with their neighbors again, we might as well ship over a few of our un-tried weapons systems for some real-world T&E.

FWIW, the current US News has an article on gene-tracing being used as tool for determining the patterns of early human migration. One thing that they have learned is that Israelis and Palestinians genetically indistinguishable from each other (and probably every other group in the eastern Med). They are really practicing fratricide when these things happen.

If the combatants could cooperate (Israeli technology + Arab oil & manpower) the region would probably have the strongest economy in the world.
