Aloha, the newbie is back.
Anyway, I have some .308 that is stamped "MAL 7.62 11-83". I can pick up the ammo by the bullet using a magnet. Although this is copper jacketed, do I have steel CORE, or steel inner jacket? I am assuming that this is Malasian ammo, just from the MAL, but am not completely sure. Is the 11-83 the date of manufacture? Am I an annoying pest with all these questions? Are we there yet? Can we go to Dairy Queen?
Thanks-
The Jackalope

- Mild steel core, I donm't think the Malaysian is copper-washed
- Malaysian
- 11-83 is the time of manufacture
- No. This is normal. We were ALL newbies once.

Not to argue with Ted, but no steelcore 7.62X51 is importable or has been imported for a long time because of AP ammo restrictions. Even if it isn't really AP :(

Hmm. We keep seeing mild steel core ammunition from European sources. I wasn't sure the importat ban applied to mild steel.
From the GCA of 1968:
(B) The term "armor piercing ammunition" means --
(i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron,
brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or
(ii) a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.
(C) The term "armor piercing ammunition" does not include shotgun shot required by Federal or State environmental or game regulations for hunting purposes, a frangible projectile designed for target shooting, a projectile which the Secretary finds is primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes, or any other projectile or projectile core which the Secretary finds is intended to be used for industrial purposes, including a charge used in an oil and gas well perforating device.
IN ADDITION- the ATF have a special page dedicated to Armor Piercing ammunition, including amendments made as recently as 1994:
ATF: Armor Piercing ammunition (http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/legal/armor.htm)
No mention is made of rifle caliber armor piercing ammunition.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!?

Ted,
7.62X51 is considered "handgun" ammunition because handguns were available in this caliber when all this BS was written. This is what happened to the 7.62X39 steelcore when a handgun was made in that caliber. I also saw 7.62X51 mentioned by caliber as a no-no on some AP list. Many other calibers are exempt (.50 handgun  )
PS:look at the bottom of your link :(
