Never saw corrosive in .308, but I have seen it blow a magazine right out of the rifle. BE VERY CAREFUL. I believe the major problem year is "75".

It is not supposed to be corrosive. The accuracy is there, but the reliability is not. Plinking ammo, yes, storage ammo, no. Was supposedly some questions in it's storage quality. Have seen good results in groups (not too dirty either), but have seen some duds. My expectations on corrosive ammo are that most western ammo from the mid 60's on is considered mostly non-corrosive. Anybody else heard anything different?
Also I saw some Chilean ammo that looked like it had been soaked. If in doubt, shoot it, but clean good shortly thereafter. Actually, even the questionable ammo gave good results (outside of the duds).

I bought some of this stuff last year from my local gun shop for about $3.00 a box 70's era Chilian 308 made in chile by FEME I was shooting it thru a Isreali FN model 98 bolt rifle and was pretty accurate but I had a hard time opening the bolt after every shot, the head space on the rifle was fine so I know it had to be the ammo.

Okay thanks!
This stuff ia marked FAMAE so it's probably the same stuff, it's marked 74 also, don't think I'll get any more.

I would say no. I shot about 120+ rounds through my STG-58 and got side tracked and did not clean it for 10 days. It showed no signs of corrosion that I could tell.
Anyway, It is still a bad habit to not clean your weapon the day you shoot it, but in my one case, the Chile ammo did no harm.

Hootbro,

Hey, that Oly arms AR you sold me has become my favorite woodchuck rifle, so far I have taken them clean out to 300 yards with open sights and 400 with the 3to9 scope, lottsa fun chasing them with 62 grain HP's :D

Back to the subject at hand, the Chilean is non corrosive, I bought 500 rounds from Dan's and have knocked off several hundred rounds with absolute reliability although some of it was pretty dusty in the box, shot quite accurately out of my SA R1 and from the L1A1 I used to own. Great deal at $50 delivered.

Glad to hear that Jeff. You using the steel case ammo you bought from Dan's also? If so, has it been working alright in the Oly? Treat that rifle well, it was like giving up a child when I sold that rifle. Probably will replace it with another Oly at Christmas time.

Hootbro,

Yep, using Dan's steel cased stuff, shoots great!

I feel the same way about the rifle, I have a very expensive Ruger target/varmint rig all tricked out that has been gathering dust (figuratively) since I bought your Oly, even though the Ruger is a 500 yard plus rig, the Oly is so much more fun and damn near as accurate.

You should see the looks I get from hicks and lib's when they see it, OOOOOOHHHHH EVIL BLACK RIFLE!, make you wanna laugh or puke depending on the individual :D

Sure makes for an interesting sight I am sure, seeing a guy with an EBR walking the fields! Maybe I should get a ninja suit, then people will just think I work for ATF ;)

I was told by a guy selling ammo at a gunshow that this stuff is not too good to shoot out of an autoloader like a FAL and he actually recommended against using it, saying that they there have been known to be problems with quality with alot of the Chilean stuff.

I was told that there was never a nato stamped 308 rnd made that was corrosive.

Anybody hear any different? I would like to know.

I might use this box of ammo for a paperweight. I've got a case of Portugese on the way. I've heard good things about that ammo.

I ran through 500 rounds of it. It's pretty hot and it's dirty, but it should be OK to shoot. Mix it in a mag with some RG and you will definitely tell a difference. How much Portugese did you get? I picked up 1800 rd of Singapore at Kieslers Monday. It was $25-200 Wholesale

Okay I just bought 1000 rds. had about 300 rds. laying around (if I mix all my types together) I figured Mr. Bush was trying to tell me something with this money he's returned to me. I hope there's no jackbooted thugs in my future!
But you never know even if you live in the same area as a felon you may be picked! :)
Are you going to the creek this fall?

don't do it! here's a better example of a fired round. Case heads often get torn off, it's total junk. 75 headstamp.

Which ammo are you referring to vicg1??
The original thread was about the Chile stuff but we bounced around a bit.
Rough looking case though.
Thanks for the pic. worth 1000 words!
I guess if you experience it firsthand you can think of a few more words too!

I fired about 100rds of 74 vintage Chilean out of my STG kit gun and it did fine. The only thing I noticed was that it seemed quite a bit hotter than what I normally shoot (M-118 Special Ball).
The Chilean stuff kicked the brass about 6' further than the M-118.

FWIW, here is a photo of the 74 stamped Chilean ammo I received from Dan's. I have shot close to 300+ rounds through my Cetme and Imbel FAL with no problems. Like others have said, the horror stories seem to point to 75 stamped ammo. I would avoid this also.

Hootbro

Chilean 75. Same box as shown in pic a post or two above. 74 seems to be ok but not the 75!
