FAL match forms here (http://www.rbgc.org/FAL%20Match/Forms/2008FALform.pdf)

We're staying on the 100 yard range this year.

There will be some changes in the action shooting section. It will be a bit more physical...more movement than before and some different targets to deal with.

The target section will be very similar to the last three years.

Ideas for side-matches will be entertained.

And, of course, the after-match party.

I look forward to seeing all of you again!

Looks like the pdf busted the links for the shirts...here they are:

Bummer Hagar! You'll be missed.

It's just some more up and down and maybe another 100 yards to run...don't panic.

Hot dog, count me in. I'll be there Friday as usual, so if you need help with the set Bruce, let me know.

Hagar, just looked at the map and found this:

RBGC...................................Stone Mountain

See, it aint that far and you would be back by dark. Unless you go to the after match de-brief , stress relief, and B/S,er, I mean planning session. You can bring the wife unit. After all, the match is family oriented entertainment.

100 yds. Are you sure you want us to run that far? It could take most of the daylight hours for some of us (ME) to motivate that far without mechanical aid.:uhoh: Oh well, I guess it is time to hit the track and start some laps. And I thought I could spend this time practising shooting. :]

Guys - i'm sorry to hijack a thread. I live in Kennesaw GA and would love to attend the next event. I'm looking for a local builder to build my metric kit. Anyone know of any? I've contacted M&M but they are waayy out...

No nobler deed could require my time.

Email me your phone number or what-not and we will get a meeting planned.

I've printed out the forms for mailing, try to get 'em gone this weekend. I'll try to drag the guy that got me started on these infernal weapons with me. Shouldn't be too hard, we work at the same two man office. And,he started all this. Be advised, he's a former marine. He knows a thing or two about shooting. ------Running____ damn, thought all that was behind me.

Naw, the Indian is just fine.

Let's see, couple a years ago I had a straight pull EBR 10 shot with 20 round capacity. The next year was the I better sight it in the night before, why are my sight so far off rifle. And then there was the stripper. She shed her skin faster than a monkey peeling a banana. And HOT, boy was she hot. I needed gloves to handle her.

So yeah, I really need to figure out which one I'll bring this year. Have to keep up with tradition.

Still haven't figured out which one I'll run.

Plus, ROBMAC and I are making arrangements to have EMDII at the match. We told him no excuses. The hearse better come by so we can verify the funeral. So it looks like FALBorg will rise to the occasion. Hopefully we'll shoot well too!!!!

Broke out the L1A1 today. It is still good to go. Had some issues with the para, so most likely that is the one I'll bring. No need for surprises.

Also worked with the FN-49. One hole 10 shot groups at 25 yds coming in a little over an inch. I may have to practice my stripper clip loading techniques. Ah but it is 30-06.

Oh well, decisions, decisions!!!!!!!

February 17, 2008, 16:50
TAC, you could shoot the 49 in the 'other' class if you wanted. Some folks were going to do that 2 years ago but couldn't make it. There will be at least one other shooter in other.

Oh please Stimpy, let Moses shoot his Hi-Power. Then maybe the rest of us will have a chance at the top prize. I think I can beat him in the accuracy stages and I am not sure if the 9mm has the oomph to take down the plates cleanly at 100 yds. This is where I'll make up some time (I hope):]

In the "other class"
Wouldn't help you anyway unless you are shooting in the "other class"
Besides I think it's Stimpy's turn to win it this year?

stimpsonjcat
February 18, 2008, 19:26
No hi-powers, though I have others pushing me to have a hi-power side match.

This could happen at some point when we have our own ranges to play on. Yes I know I have been saying this a while.

Turn? Did you say TURN?!?! He who wins this match has his mind and gear dialed in on match day...nothing else counts!

I *have* been shooting the FAL in the local 3-gun matches since I discovered I have more surplus 308 than 223. And we have been doing well!

But if I don't get some target practice in the round things will likely do me in just like last year.

Oh, I may as well start asking here for who wants to sponsor the match this year...TAPCO will not be on the ticket...anywhere. Donate gear or cash and get your name on the shirts!

moses
February 18, 2008, 20:13
So it isn't your turn? Cool! Can you say repeat! LOL!
I just bought 2 high power clones! That'd be sweet a high power side match! Make it so!

I will of course donate some stuff as will CMP Armory.

Well, I am still deciding whether or not to use the L1A1 or the para. Both are looking good in the performance department. Just had a thought. I can wear that uber tactical vest I won last year and use it with the para. Dress in all black with helmet -no, a balaclava- knee pads, nomex gloves and a big patch on the back that says MALL SECURITY.:D :D :D

Hey will we be able to use the sling again on the target section and the prone section of the action shoot?

Also anyone needing a mag holding rig for this shoot check this out

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=410678

I ordered one of these just to see how it was because it was so inexpensive. It holds FAL mags two per pouch just fine! And 4 on the to outside pouches!
14 FAL mags total and 2 AR mags to boot in the left shoulder pouch!
Seems to be stitched pretty heavy duty also!

No, but just because you will not be starting holding the rifle, it will be lying down in a mud puddle filled with snapping turtles, and I do not want the slings getting caught on any of the broken glass and razor wire in there.

OK, well, only up thru the second comma is true.

Tac I will actually be using a bar belt as I shouldn't need 14 mags (I hope)
Just wanted to give a heads up on a pretty good deal IMHO.

I am quicker getting the mags out of the BAR belt than the chest rig.

I do love the chest rig for an EOTWAWKI scenerio and might have to get a couple more.

Good thing they were just talkin' trash.
Adam knows of my health issues, and we had planned to call/meet after lunch.
I had no way of knowing they would be calling at 7am. I had no idea they knew where I lived either, but....
All-in-all, it worked out great and I enjoyed meeting them. Just wish they had more time here and weather was better.
Saturday isn't good, but I sure need to hit the range and try this sucker out.
We live so close, we ought to get together on some projects. I know you stay busy with your family.

If you had no issues with Rooster then you will do just fine in the FAL community. They were a tad early!

My vacation has been approved so I am a confirmed attendee. Damn, now I really gotta figure out which Fal I am going to run.

The pre Match shooters meeting, aka trashtalk and B/S session, is going to be at the Ruby Tuesdays in Dawsonville. Meeting time will be at 7:30 pm. Wear something FAL to be recognized. I'll spring for the first round of iced water. I'll be bringing a LARGE bottle of Tylenol for those of you that will get talked into a tasting/sipping session by Frank. Muzzles brakes, covered firing line and a hangover don't go together well.

Which is basically a Stoll flashider with slanted slots instead of straight.

They offer no muzzle brake type advantages.

Man, I can't believe that nobody had posted any trash talk here for the last month, especially me.

I have been practicing and shooting well. Using the .22 to hone up my precision shooting skills, especially standing. Right now I can keep all of the rounds in the black of an SR 1 center at one hundred yards. Of course that is taking my time.

All my FAL's are tuned and running smoothly. Now my only concern is whether or not I can run fast enough to keep up with the youngsters and non-gravitationally challenged shooters.

Just got the OD Duracoat on the FAL yesterday. Haven't shot anything (even a .22) in weeks. Gotta' get some rounds down range soon, or I'll suck worse than usual. But, I plan on having a great time anyway! The wife can't understand why the match is marked on the calendar. Well, I've got her going fishing with me now, who knows what's next? I just hope I remember where all those little parts go to reassemble the rifle.

The shooting award my wife is proudest of is the team match medallion from the very first FAL match. Such a simple stage...I hope to add it back into the mix when we have multiple ranges to use.

Now understand, she has placed HIGH WOMAN in the South Easts largest Garand match. When I asked her why this puny (by comparison) match garnered her favor she replied "The FAL match is HARD!"

Well put...indeed.

ps - the equivalent of trash-talk for me for the day will have to be this. I placed 1st in heavy-metal (granted, only shooter in this class, but 4th overall factor) and first in iron sights (3rd overall factor) today at the RBGC 3-gun match. It was raining, quite vigorously, for my heavy run. Somewhere in the middle of that I am quite sure my rifle said something like "are you going to pay attention to what you are doing or what?" Ummm...yes. My point being, I hope you are all practicing with your FALs!

...But I was thinking about trying to snooker Hagar into shooting the team event with me, if he'll have me.

I took the FAL up to RB about 10 days ago, and tested zero again. It's still pretty much in the middle, and still about a 4" gun with Port. OTOH, it's more like 2" with a handload.:shades:

OTO,OH-- It ain't the arrow, it's the Indian, and Shooting Bull (me) is getting old and infirm. We shall see if we can still see.

Looks like I *may* be in GA that week/end :D Plans are still not finalized; but I would still like to figger on at least showing up to watch.

I will download a form and send off just in case I'm not so intimidated as to actually participate.

I , also, need to break out the rifles and take a few shots in parctice. Haven't done anything since last year's FF !

Only thing I didn't see was using two different rifles on the separate stages? I might wanna run "SHorty" on the run'n'gun and L1A1 on the target section??? A possibility, or verbotten?

Real beers (dark ones) must be set at arms length during crying jags. See thru beers are not harmed by tears, or anything else I know of. But anyway, if you've got Modelo at hand, aren't you consoled enough?

Depending on weather, maybe. We usually attempt it for the Rifleman's Weekend (garand match saturday, springfield and bolt guns sunday) at RBGC, and I think it might be a fun tradition to start for the FAL match.

Let's kick it around and see who's interested.

I live only 15 minutes from RBGC, so when I camp there, it's only for the beer and the campfire B.S.

Coming to the range fresh from home and a good night's sleep is probably better for shooting, but what the hell--it's all about having fun, right?

Camping in the elbow of the river by MP1 is very chick friendly, what with real flush toilets and sinks 100yards from the campsite.

Only downside, other than rain, is when somebody touches off his 7Mag from the benchrests at dawn. REVEILLE, you sonsabitches!

I have had no luck with getting my wife to camp. And especially not at the gun club. She isn't anti-gun, just hates the smell of burnt powder, Hoppes, and linseed oil. Don't ask me what I was thinking...

stimpsonjcat
April 08, 2008, 21:19
LOL!

Jill actually LIKES the smell of Hoppes/CLP/etc. Heck when I started getting everything running in the new shop she came out one day and went "<Sniff!> Heyyyy...new smells!"

Yep, shooter/camper/etc...she's a real trooper...I hope Jess is like her mommy!

If someone is shooting on MP1...you're LATE!!!

I'll be "roughing it" at the same hotel across the parking lot from Ruby Tuesdays. I figure it is better to be a short crawl from the Friday night festivities than try to drive. I have 13 envelopes and will be cashing checks etc soon.

This plus the locals ought to end around 30 shooters, which is what we usually get.

You know where I will be that day Tac...anytime you can get there would be helpful.

I need to stop by and see how bad the props are, they were getting pretty nasty last year and I am sure have suffered since. Ideally we will not have the wind to deal with this year, it would be nice to have the props just sit there instead of going mobile like they usually do.

There's a nice place next to the river, about 200 yards from the range we'll be shooting on. Flat, grassy ground, shaded by trees, and washrooms with flush toilets 75 yards away from the campsite. Has picnic tables, too, IIRC.

I may camp, given a decent weather forecast, if some of the other lads do the same. Seems a bit like work, considering the fact that I live 15 minutes away. Might be some fun to hang out, drink beer, and tell lies, though.

Let's hear from some of ya!

I'll be campin' in the Best Western near the Ruby Tuesdays. Can't beat a king sized bed and a hot shower in the morning.

stimpsonjcat
May 12, 2008, 06:06
Place to camp is across the road from MP1 (there are signs) there is a bridge over the creek there and if you go across the bridge there is a building with bathrooms and showers.

I will not be camping as I have guests coming in and lots of other things to deal with.

Sighting in: There will NOT be a provision for this on the range we are shooting on...I tried to allow for this the first year and it got stupid. About the only way for a non-member to do this is to find a member to be your 'sponsor' and watch you sight in...meaning you need to be there with a member to use any of the ranges other than the one the match is on. Find a member and beg them. If you get there on Friday and I am still there we can probably work something out.

But to be clear, no, the day of the match there are no provisions for sighting in...come ready.

I think this would set a precedent I'd rather not get into just yet. In the future, when we have more action shooting ranges I may decide to open up additional classes as we will be considerably more efficient than we are now.

Stopped by MP2 this morning and zero'd out rifle in at 100 yards. It was still set up for the 600 yard shoot last fall.

Checked out all of our mags also. Would have taken 180 rounds to put 20 through each one so we loaded them all with 20 and fired the first 5, took 10 rounds out, then fired the last 5.

Still not sure how we are going to carry mags, I am leaning toward using the Sportsmandguide.com chest rig but Bob just wants to cary them in BDU pockets.

Tried our luck at offhand FAL shooting this morning, Saturday ought to be interesting.

stimpsonjcat
May 28, 2008, 20:34
Yes, there is more than one relay for the boot camp section, just make sure one of you is on relay 1. If it gets 'full' just remind me you are sharing gear and I will move someone off the line.

I did finally manage to get a few minutes practice for standing/sitting/prone...it went fairly well.

Just a reminder for those attendees. There will be a pre-match BS/Bragging session on Friday at the Ruby Tuesday's in Dawsonville just off Ga 400. Bring your significant others if they are willing to put up with the rest of us riff-raff. Just wear something FAL related so we can pick you out and wave you over to our table.  :whiskey: :whiskey:

Checked zero of the para and it is dead on. Went so well that this is what I am gonna shoot on Saturday.

Stimpy, what is the weather forecast. Trying to decide if shorts or pants are on the menu. I figure if I wear shorts the competition will be blinded by the bright flash of white. Only welding goggles will prevent eye damage:rofl:
I'll take any edge over the other shooters I can get. Remember, psychological warfare is still warfare.

Both you and Mr. Bill are examples of the bromide, "It ain't the arrow, it't the Indian".

Some day, when I can figure out a way not to crash and burn on the shotgun segment, I may reappear at 3-gun myself. But right now, I'm embarking on a fling with the Garand over the Highpower Course. The other day, when I ran into you at the club, I had just come off the 600yd line, with a 196-5x. With an M1. (!!!) (I mean, !!!)

I ain't shot a mid-190s score at 600 since the Presbyterians gave me presbyopia back about 2003. So hope springs eternal. If it turns out not to be a fluke, you ain't gonna see me at 3-gun until after Nationals.

Long as you're WATCHIN' ballet, and not being in one, you're aces with me. You can shoot all your life, but the kids only grow up once.

I got a sneak preview of the course this afternoon, and I am beside myself with trepidation. Let me just say that it will not be kind to the elderly, the overweight, and the infirm. Stimpy oughta call it "Stents and splints".

You will be missing a good one. If I survive the afternoon, I wll post an after action.

After action report on our first ballet recital:

You don't have to worry about me ballet dancing, that would not be a pretty sight. I'll leave that up to the big one in the picture, she did a great job.

The little one sat quietly with the help of the now empty bag of cookies.

A good time was had by all.

Wish I could have been both places. Stimpy does set up a tough course, as well as run a great match and throw a helluva party.

Couldn't make the party, which is probably getting a bit wild by now, but it was a hell of a match.

Had way more fun than I expected.

It was great to meet so many Filers.

I couldn't get Bob up to leave by 0600 so I left him at home and I had a blast. All I heard when I got home was "I wish I got up, I was bored all day". First day of summer break and he is already bored.

Today was enough to convince me that I need to get a scattergun and try a bit of 3 gun shooting.

Thanks, BR, you saved my slow fingers from typing all that. I haven't had that much fun wearing clothes and sober in a long time! Do want to say thanks to Stimpy and his gang of cohorts for all the hard work setting up the range, pacing the shooters, and scoring the targets. You guys are the best. And Stimpy, damn if I can understand how you had the stamina to pace that many shooters, cover that much ground, and take the win. My hat's off to you! Well done, Sir.

Stimpy, I only had to use 4x4 LOW to crawl out of that HOLE ya'll parked me in:devil: I think the two trees in my way getting out will grow back in a few years!!!!!!!

It was an awesome day and as ALWAYS, the match was well run, well organized and attended by a SUPER group of guys..(well, most of ya anyway!) Deltaten drove down to GA from PA...WOW....Talk about HARD CORE.

It's always fun to really TEST the FAL platform under stressful conditions and see which breaks first..MAN or MACHINE...this Saturday it was a lot machines...the men held up really well considering! Speaking of which, STIMPY how's the thumb??!! Even with 1/2 a forearm and a extra crispy left thumb, the Stimpster won the match. Moses over came a Three Stooges comedy routine to bring home a trophy..now which way DID that BUCKLE go!! One of our sponsors actually won 3rd with lowest round count of ANY Match ever! 26...26....26...maybe we should have let him leave that earplug up his nose afterall.

I hope other board members will take the opportunity to get out and SHOOT their FAL rifles and enjoy these truely awesome weapons. Notice the smoking forearms and barrels in the pictures below, the SWEAT, constant MOTION the shooters are in, but most of ALL, look at the smiles and satisfied GRINS on EVERYONES face!!

It was a BLAST Stimpy...

Great pics States!!!

Where are the rest guys?

I'd also like to post a special thanks to my brother Conor, Rob (fabricator), stew, and Tac-40 for their efforts in helping set up, run, and tear down this match. Also I cannot understate both the effort and support of my wife Jill, without whom I would not have the organizational skills to pull this off.

It takes a lot of effort to organize, design, build, run, and tear down this match...and I cannot take most of the credit.

It helps greatly that FAL lovers seem to be very giving and helpful folks. At the after match party this year I got to tell the long strange story of my love affair with the FAL. That was a long time ago I walked into a gun show and paid $600 for a Century rifle that didn't even work. Then I found this place and the rest...as they say...is history.

I very much enjoyed shooting and hanging out with you guys again this year.

Well...........you see......it's really a thorn in my side right now........

I went to the line with my Izzy Std. barrel with an EOtech and the EOtech would only come on at 1/2 brightness...so I dumped the sight and switched to standard (Open sight class). Had not shot that rifle w/o EOtech in several years so didn't expect to be able to hit a damn thing. So my expectations were LOW.

Timer went off, I dropped down and fired at the first plate..dropped it, dropped the second and realized the gun was good to go and cleared the plates in short order, ran to the next station and swept the plates in short order and Stimpy was behind me cheering me on as at that time I was having one of (if not the best run of the day), got to the shoot house and 1/2 way through, the hammer wouldn't reset...after 30 seconds of screwing with every possible trigger/safety position, Bruce and I realized the rifle had PUKED...FSE first generation hammer broke clean in half...It had 800 to 1000 rounds total on it.

The MAN was in rare form...the MACHINE went KAPOOT....maybe next year.

I bet our Cat can skin their Cat with rifle, pistol, or shotgun. Is there such thing as a Hogan's Alley Cat?. We better get our flip-flop zeros nailed down before going, though.

One more thing-- we need to pack the vehicles intelligently as far as personnel goes. If we put too many of the 6'5", 250 to 300# monsters like me, Azrial, and a couple of the SC boys in one truck, we'll wear out the shocks before we get to Birmingham.

I am VERY serious about renting or chartering a bus or RV for New Mexico next year.

We will need something with comfortable sets and easy to drive. It should also have plenty of cargo space. Possibly two conversion vans would work as well.

I will start investigating rentals, what I need is a count of how many are seriously interested and who may have access to a large vehicle.

We have a year to plan. Let's show the Thugs how we'll clean their clocks!

Cool. We can get a '39 International Harvester, load it up with weed, acid, Pabst Blue Ribbon and guns, with loudspeakers on top. Then as we drive across country through little towns we can annoy the local squares with psychedelic music and beat poetry.

"You're either on the bus, or off the bus."

But seriously, count me in!

Short Bus...we don't need no STINKIN' short bus...

I want us to bring all the gang. I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists.

And when we git there, we'll do a Number Six on 'em.

I probably resemble quite a few of the above. But excuse my ignorance (I aint from here), what is a NUMBER SIX?

And Otis, where the heck did you get a hold of my wife's photo album?

Hedley Lamarr: "Number 6"? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that one...
Taggart: Well, that's where we go a-ridin' into town, a whampin' and whompin' every livin' thing that moves within an inch of its life. Except the women folks, of course.
Hedley Lamarr: You spare the women?
Taggart: NAW. We rape the sh!t out of them at the Number 6 Dance later on.
Hedley Lamarr: Marvelous.

I'm beginning to worry about next year...

Methodists, too...?

That might be going too far.

Dudes, you are all cordially invited to take a shower, wash your clothes, and pee in the yard at the Claudio Exacto Commune, here in Albuquerque.

We have a good size floor, a shed with two couches, and even a porch monkey couch for smokers out front.

Please feel free to crash here if your route takes you along I-40. It is then 4 hours up I-25 to Raton.

We can all go for lunch at the Ashram Free Kitchen, and then hit Whole Foods for samples.

ce, you know they aint gonna cross the mighty mississippi. Southerners fear leaving the south. When in the south they they are the majority, and talk down on the outsiders and yanks with much distain. when they cross the river, they deflate their egos rather quickly. And tone down the accent, in an attempt to draw less attention to themselves in the presence of real english speakers. See you boys in raton. Bring some Rc cola and moon pies.

Been out your way once. Kinda fun and different. It was neat being able to see a long way, even if ya couldn't see much.

i know what a porch monkey is, and i figured you lot were mostly country boys, and i like rc cola and moon pies, rc cola is kinda hard to find here. we got a pepsi , dr pepper and coca cola bottling companies here in town. so rc is kinda rare, moon pies can only be truly enjoyed with an rc cola. now shut up and bring me my boiled peanuts

Coca-Cola was invented here in Atlanta. Your plant is just a branch.

You may have heard too much Jerry Clower.

We, on the other hand, will prepare culturally for the Southwest Experience by memorizing some R.D Mercer material, and studying tumbleweed/cactus/mesquite/greasewood picture flashcards, so as to not look like complete peckerwoods.;)

Like an audience with the Pope, the very idea fills me with a sense of unworthiness.

A commemorative T-shirt for the occasion would be a mighty prize among the cognoscenti.

It would be great to have as many as possible so as the director of Falfest 2008 I would like to invite everyone out to Falfest 2009.

Since I have met and shot with PBR Streetgang I take all said in jest.:shades:

Now we are going to have the 3 gun shoot and george will think up something that will not be as easy as this year but I am making some down time so I can shoot.

We also have 3 other shoots as you might have read. Practice your target shooting @200 and 600 yards and also practice your shooting a moving target about 11"X18" at 200 yards and you will be fine.

If I get enough people confirmed by about march or so I will plan on running 10 points instead of 5.

I look forward to seeing all of you.

I just need ya to bring some sauce! Some may not know it but I did live in the south once.

And yes we shoot Fal's at 600. For the adventurous Whittington has shots out to 1300 yards or so. Bring your ammo.:uhoh:

Dang it boy! That's the bucket hangin' from the persimmon tree in the back yard. If it's high class like mine there's a pallet on the ground to keep yer' toes outta' the mud. Get one with close spaced boards on the top or the soap will fall down in there. And don't ferget, it's EVERY saturday, not just the ones when your not busy!

Hot damn, we got us a National Champeenship FAL Match abrewin. Sounds like an Usin's agin Dem's grudge match.

My schedule permitting, count me in. Of course I'll have to ride in the bus with the overload springs installed.

Stimpy. A big thank you to you and Jill for the great time. and fantastic hospitality. Next year I am bringing a "chicken mitt" for general use. The last three years, one has been needed to prevent serious injury when the "I smell meat cooking" reflex is initiated. I will be prepared next year.

Speaking of next year, I am going to run the optics division. Where else can you win a trophy, a prize, AND go home with more ammo than you started with.

I'm in.

Maybe me and AndyC can team up against the rest of you, and us two rockspiders will give you yanks, southerners and rednecks (Brits) a spanking. We won't discriminate!

Since we are so outnumbered, we can make Shlomo, Moses, Tac-40, Otis, Stimpy, Warriorpoet and JohnnyReb honorary South Africans , but beware, we might take you along when we go invade it in a couple of years...

Here in Darkest Cherokee County, we just take a hard-tooth rake and beat the snakes outta the ditch when we want a bath. It gets kinda spooky from March thru October, so most of us hold off till fall, when the critters goes inta hibernation.

Would we all become honorary African Americans? Maybe SOF can do a cover story. But don't wait too many years, or I'll have to invade on Lark electric scooter stolen from Kroger's. Only outfit that'll have me will be the Old Vaarttrekkers.
