Several smiths and others have mentioned using both of these products for refinishing. Are these both the same technology with similar results in terms of color, toughness, etc.? TIA

very similar, different manufacturer's and slightly different compositions. KG Guncoat is a good product. Too thin for my taste and environmental conditions, requiring multiple coats, but a wider color range than my manufacturer.

So, can I buy a can of gunkote or similar stuff in a spray can? If so where?

Brownell's has a couple of options for bake-on spray paint.

You CAN, but I think you'll get pretty poor results. Better to buy as a liquid and use a large airbrush o automotive detail paint gun. Can't control application well enough IMO out of a can.
