Well I've heard military adaptor kits were
made both for metric and inch fals. I've
never seen one. I've heard HK made at least
one metric 22 lr adaptor kit (only ever seen
a HK G3 -> 22 lr adaptor kit).

So I'm curious.

Who made official 22 lr adaptor kits for
FN-FAL style rifles ?

How many were made and what for ?

Were any ever imported in to the US or sold
on the surplus market ?

What did the kit consist of ?

When I ws at the Red Star Military Museum with Kevin Adams we looked at an adapter that was made by Erma I believe. Kevin and the gent behind the counter said that most of the ones they'd seen were HK in manufacture. It consisted of two adapted magazines, the bolt, and the barrel insert. The barrel insert is a chamber insert that has the barrel built onto the end, so it is a chamber/barrel liner actually. There were a couple of odd tools in their also. It was all together in a wood box about 24"x12"x2.5" with Kraut writing all over it. I believe it had about a $700.00 price tag on it as well. Ask Kevin about them if you want a really informed opinion, he actually has a couple of them.

I have a kit that HK made for the German G1 FAL. It consists of a barrel liner that slips in, a bolt and 2 FAL mags with .22 inserts. It comes in a wooden case with labelling for the G1. I have no idea how many were imported.

I have also been informed that HK made kits for the Canadian army for their inch version of the FAL.

I've seen HK and Erma 22 units for metric rifles.

All the "inch" units I've seen were by HK.

I've got an Erma unit and it works like a champ.

They are offered once in a while for $600-700. If you get the chance, I'd encourage you to pick one up.

Regards.

daimok,

I'll give this a shot but there are more knowledgeable folks than me on FAL history. The Germans adopted the FAL as there main rifle in the 50s. They called it the G1. The story I have heard is that the Belgians decided not to sell FALs to the Germans anymore and the Germans went to the G3.

The kit I have works well and is quite accurate.

Me,

There is a guy, I can't remember his name, Cieaner, or Sianner or something like that, who makes 22 coversion kits for all kinds of firearms. I've seen his adds in American Rifleman and SG news. I would contact him and see what sez. For the prices you are talking about (600+) he might be willing to custom make one for you.

Sgt Rock- I am definetly interested, either in the one possibly for sale or if you can track down the guy in Florida. I would be happy with a single shot for foraging, hunting you know what I mean. Always thought a HK 91 with the collapsing buttstock and 22 lr kit would be the ultimate backpacking/survival weapon. A FAL would be even better since I own one.

The .22 conversion kit supposedly made by H&K for the L1A1 is detailed in the blue-covered Australian training manual [*pamphlet* in Oz parlance] though those the Aussies had may have been manufactured at Lithgow.

I'd post photos and quotes, but Jen still has my copy of the Australian L1A1 SLR manual.

The .22 inch kits made by H&K were made for the FAL's.

UK purchased a quanity of kits from H&K converted the magazines (removing the .22 inserts and installing them in inch magazines) then renaming the kits as L12A1.

These kits where then sold by the UK to other 'inch' countries as the L12A1 kit. In Canada it's known as the C1A1 sub cal kit.

I have one of those 22lr converstion kits for the German G1, and works real good in my Springfield Armoury SAR48. It is a real kick to take it to my local indoor pistol range, and shoot a FAL-type gun.

The extra mags are virtually impossible to find. Did they have any more?
