Due to some unfortunate events (all of my rifles were stolen, 1 SAR-1, 1 tricked out FAL, and 1 1929 Mosin-Nagant 91/30) I have to buy new toys.

I plan on replacing the FAL, and the 91/30 there's no question about that...but i'm having second thoughts on my SAR-1. sure they're super reliable, and inexpensive to shoot, but the ranges I go to only allow paper targets. there's no bumping, and I can't shoot at empty milk jugs, etc. to me, it's not really exciting or fun to shoot the AK, then go down range (only 50yds) and see my target is peppered with random holes. i'm sure even the most steady shooter would have accuracy issues with a SAR-1.

So i'm considering getting an AR-15, or a Mini 14. My only real concern is the price of ammo. i was just wondering if anybody out there with either an AR-15 or Mini-14 (or both) could offer some comments.

I'm just looking for a reliable, accurate rifle that isn't going to make me poor

The AR 15 is much better than the Mini 14, the action is tighter, it is more accurate off the line, accessories are more plentiful (and affordable) right down to getting mags, repair parts or other goodies. Plus you can build your own AR for a lot less than buying a Mini off the bat.

Oh, and I suppose another question I have is...is it really worth it get an AR-15?

I'm just looking for some opinions on what other people would do if they had about as much money as typical AR-15 would cost, and what gun they would buy.

I've considered a .300 Winchester Magnum, but the price of ammo scares me away.

I built a $1400 AR 15 for under $700

As for ammo KY Imports has Isreali plastic 5.56 ammo for $129 / 1000

HAHAHAHAHA,

You can get pulled 55 gr bullets for about $45 / 1000 and reload up for waaaaaaaaay cheaper than what current loaded ammo or even base components would cost

Personally I only use 5.56 for varmint shooting
If SHTF go to .308 or 7.62 x 39
5.45 x 39 is still pretty cheap for plinking, get yourself an AK 74

Second the AK74. Wayyy more accurate than a 7.62X39, and cheaper to shoot.

Yes. They are easy to build...and it seems every makes trinkets for them.

They aren't near as expensive as some might think. You could get a $100 lower (plus transfer fee) and and a $400ish basic upper and have a NIB truck gun.

Now, if you want chrome lined barrel, flip down sights, free float guards, rebar cutter muzzle, etc...well, that'll be more $$$.
