Jamaica purchased British and Australian made L1A1's
and

FWIW- I think you'll find ALL production L1A1 have non-cut HGs.

Look closely at the bottom pic. What's the soldier in the shadows carrying? Looks like a bullpup of some sort.

I'm not sure if it's wearing a scope, or if that's some sort of raised sight rail. The shape of it reminds me of that HK SL8-1 rifle sight, but as far as I know they don't make a bullpup like that. Doesn't look like an Aug to me, either.

Ran the bottom photo through paintshop pro, kind of looks like a FAMAS (sp). HTH, Dan.

I don't know what that is. Oh well, if I'm ever in Jamaica and see one slung on a soldier I'll just pull it off for a closer look.
It's an SA80 (or if you prefer, L85). Jamaica bought some from Royal Ordance in the early 1990s (or maybe it was the late 1980s?). Royal Ordance was desperate to sell some of them, and I think they might have bought them for rather cheap.

Interesting that they say the SA80 is manufactured by Heckler and Koch (UK). I'm assuming that's wrong.
Msu89dawgs- It is technicaly made by HK, they bought Royal Ordance a few years ago (or did Royal Ordance buy them?) and they (HK) have been working on improving the SA80 (good luck ;), very soon, if it hasn't happend already, most, if not all, of the British SA80s will be sent back to the factory and have some HK improvements done on them, who knows if this will work.

I agree with daveinpa, mrf2 and msu89dawgs, looks like L85 to me. Makes sense that they bought FAL's from the Brits, then got L-85's later.

It's neat what you'll see in third world countries, I was in Haiti in 93 and at the airport in Cap Haitian the soldiers guarding things were carrying FAL para's, quite a site to see. To bad the Haitians dont know squatt about weapons care, especially in a tropical clime. Sorry I didnt get pictures but they were a bit jumpy around Americans for some reason :D
Side note, that strret looks like it could have been in Cap Haitian, there are absolutely no building codes.

kithoc,
Were you on the Insperation (Carnival Cruise Lines) Last Wednesday? I too was in Montego Bay and saw the same presence from the JDF folks. Just curious.
Regards,
Jim

Master Blaster,
No, I was not on the cruise. :(
I just think the long flash hider gives
the L1A1 a nice, sui generis, sleek profile. :)
State of Emergency in Kingston.
Local drug lord barricades off slum, stands down cops and troops.
Up to 60 dead in ensuing raids.
Check the guy second from the right.

They tried to sell them mate but no one was really interested in buying them. I would suggest they cut the Jamaicans a deal to take a few off their hands or were left over from a training excursion the Brits did (leave a few sample small arms to try and get some sales).
Back in the late 80s Australia was trying to sell the F88 into Asia (a deal we did with Steyr in that they worried about selling the AUG everywhere else and we paid royalties on the sales of the Aussie built rifles), my old boss, whist still a serving Army Major, was sent up to Indonesia as part of the sales pitch to them (ADI was Govt owned at the time hence the Army involvement in an essentially commercial enterprise). The Brits were actively marketing the SA80/L85 in Asia at the same time, they had even less success than we did ....
