I was out shooting my FAL the other day with a DSA 10rd magazine. I'm in NJ, so we can't have anything that holds over 15 rounds. We can have high capacity magazines, as long as they are temporarily blocked so they can't hold no more than 15 rounds. Blocking can be achieved with a length of wooden dowel inside the mag body or any other method. This method is currently legal here, but could be subject to change soon. ------->

My DSA 10rd magazine was having problems, the floorplate would open up under the recoil of firing. The front tab on the bottom of the magazine seems to be bent too sharp, preventing the floorplate from seating properly.

I was going to place an order for more magazines, but at $25.00 each I'll pass. Plus I didn't want any more problem magazines. If you get some of DSA's Austrian 20rd magazines, they have three witness holes in the back of them.

Here's what I did...

For about $30.00, I went to Home Depot/Lowes and bought a pop-rivet gun, some 1/8 X 1/8 inch aluminum rivets, and some 1/8 inch aluminum washers. I had a blocked Austrian 20rd mag that has been collecting dust. It was blocked with a wooden dowel that would flop around, was annoying, and would bind the magazine spring. I took the floorplate off the magazine, to look in the interior. If you have one of these mags you will notice that the witness holes are inside of a channel, where the back of the follower rides (and activates the bolt hold-open after the last round is fired). This channel will also keep the magazine spring away from the rivet, so the spring won't bind or get caught on it.

I took a washer and snipped a small section off from either side of the washer hole, so the modified washer fits in the channel. Put this washer over the middle hole. Install a pop-rivet from the outside, and underneath the magazine. You would be holding the magazine sideways with the front facing upward, and the back of the magazine facing the ground. Install the rivet, replace the floorplate and you're done. You can also remove the spring and follower to do this, but it is a pain to re-install. It's easier to install the rivet and washer with the follower/spring still installed in the magazine.

Now the magazine will hold 11 rounds of ammunition, and was not permanently altered in any way. The follower won't pass the rivet, but if you manage to force it by, the follower won't come back up.

I tried the modified magazine today and it worked flawlessly, and did not bind the magazine spring at all. You can also get some sheet metal or aluminum stock to fit in the channel, and adjust it until the magazine holds the desired amount of ammunition. Drill the metal so it lines up with one of the witness holes, pop-rivet it and you're done.

Nice work, good imagination and cleverness.
My concern would be that since you could force more than 15 rnds in it that it would still be illegal. The law wouldn't have to care if it functioned, just that it could hold +15 even if they had to force them in.
Just my .02 cents... for what it's worth, which is more than two cents now considering copper prices.
How about mimicking what Colt did to block their 20's down to hunting 5's by using a band of metal riveted inside with a tab bent over to totally block follower from dipping down?

Good luck!

Thanks. Actually, it is hard to get the 12th round loaded. You can force the 12th round partially in, but it is a pain to get back out as it gets stuck in the magazine feed lips. I just mentioned it in theory I guess.

When I tried putting the rivet in first with the follower/spring removed, I had a difficult time getting the follower past the rivet upon reassembly. That is why I mentioned that the follower wouldn't come back up. There is enough room inside that you could possibly use a longer rivet, and maybe add another washer or two.

I thought about the sheet-metal blocked Colt magazines. I don't have the tools to cut out the metal to the exact dimensions, and this was easier. If you don't have an Austrian magazine on hand, you could just drill an 1/8" hole in the back of another magazine.

NJ SUCKS!
Move away from there!
That will fix your mag problems.

Unfortunately, due to my job and family I'm stuck here for awhile. Hopefully one day I'll be free.

I made the move the from MD in 99 to the deep mountains of Western PA. Had my carry permit issued on my lunchbreak and can shoot, buy, and, build without out state problems. Yes I make less money, but a country boy can survive. East coast libs s--k. Better judged by 12 OF YOUR PERS than carried by 6.:aug:
