Are there any other ways to place a receiver in a vice using an improvised method instead of buying an expensive receiver wrench..I would like to time my barrel myself but just dont want spend the money for one time use. Any help would be greatful..

Stick a charging handle with the lug removed in the slot (probably need to insert it backwards for the process) to keep from smooshing the charging handle rails during the the operation.

You can use a pair of AR-15 barrel blocks to hold the receiver.

Many folks buy the tools, use once or a few times, and then sell them. they sell fast when discounted. Or advertise where you live and borrow from another builder. http://chilirat.com/emoticons/chilirat.gif
