well the same reason there was a "shortage" of primers way back in 91 ( ? )
there are millions of primers available, they are just the high end fully optioned kind, you know complete with case, powder, and bullet!!!!  :p
As production gets shifted to military so goes the "excess" that was for the private sector.
Thus, with less supply and equal or even inflated demand comes higher prices, and then there is that pesky fact that EVERYTHING is getting more expensive

Try shopping somewhere else:rolleyes:
I just picked up a pile of CCI 200's for a really good price. I'd have gotten more (the seller had plenty) but I have enough to keep me busy for months now.
Yet another desperate non-issue brought to you all by "Error 411"

FWIW, Widener's has CCI250 (http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=247&dir=278|284|316) @ $21.65/1000 and CCI34 (http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=249&dir=278|284|316) @ $70/5000.
They also have Winchester WLRM (http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=742&dir=278|284|314) on sale @ $18.25/1000 and a bunch of different Wolf (http://www.wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=278|284|737) primers @ ~$19/1000

I think the high cost of primers is due to the fact that the Oil and Gas industries in TX and LA have been wiped out by a nuclear missle fired by the Tali411ban which wiped out all the petrochemical industry in the area. Since primers are made of chemicals and you need petrochemicals to make chemicals, that is why Cabela's and Midway are totaly out. Also the brass and nickel used to make the cups is usually imported to the US via barges of ore on Mississippi River which is now unpassable due to the high levels of radiation and the fact that the barge captians cant pay their fuel bills.
Give me a break, just cause two mail order companies, who tend to be priced high anyway, are out of certian types of primers does not mean there is a shortage. It is nowhere near like 91 as all the local gunshops have plenty of primers as well as other mail order vendors. Even in 91 you could still find primers, you just had to get on the phnoe and call around.

IF there is a shortage, then it's a knock-on effect of surplus drying up:
Lots more people getting into reloading as a consequence.
Over here, we have a temporary shortage of powder but no shortage of primers, brass & bullets. In fact bullet prices have fallen slightly.

Mike: Be a sport and send over a ship or two of the brass and those cheap bullets will yea! While your at it throw in a couple of pallets of that good malt vinegar you guys have over there. I am fixing to make some potato salad!;)
edit to add: Oh and toss in a couple of boxes of primers for 411man. He seems to be having trouble locating some!

I am curious to know how many of you guys actually order primers online, I have looked and decided with the hazmat it is SOOOOO much cheaper to buy them local, even if the price is a buck or two/thou higher than online.

I buy primers (at least 5k) when I buy powder (only when I need several pounds) to spread out the hazmat but if I run dry I support my range and buy them there.

I did get the #34's from Wideners. Even with Hazmat, it was way cheaper than buying them locally. I think it came out to something like $14/k for 5 or 10 k.
For those in PA, I do have some Remington small rifle and CCI large rifle available. $18/k. I will not ship, hazmat is too expensive!!

Karl,
T&T Reloading (www.tntreloading.com) in PA has a deal if you purchase 25K of primers they eat the hazmat charge. Also if you purchase 16 lbs of powder they eat half hazmat and for 32 lbs the again eat the whole hazmat charge.
I usually put together two orders a year and get powder for the guys I work with and spread the shipping charge.
The last order was for 55 lbs of powder and 18K of primers all shipped in one box. I worked out to each Lb of powder only costing 75 cents for shipping.
