View Full Version : benign gun bags
Just a heads up for people looking for a "benign" carry bag for your AK. Sports Authority sells a bag for field hockey equipment that will hold a fixed stocked or folder AK and a couple of mags for ~$25.00. And the pink one is REALLY a sleeper.

I did and think I know the one you are referring to. That said, posting a teaser like this is like saying that Chrysler has a great four door that your family will fit in nicely for around $30,000. The blue colored one is great. If you've used something that works particularly well don't leave us hanging. No offense intended.

It would probably be safe sitting in plain view in the back of your SUV, but when you walked up to the firing line with it, people would figure it out. :D
Sorry can't post a picture - or a map to the store, heh.
I had been looking for something that didn't scream "GUN!!!" to hold the underfolder. (I'm going to make that the "truckgun".)
I was in the store thinking tennis bag or something when I saw the field hockey bags. It's flat and about eight inches wide and expands to about an inch and a half. Gun slides right in. I'm thinking of glueing velcro on a couple of mags and sewing the other piece of velcro inside the upper part of the bag where the zipper is. Ak and two mags. If that won't take care of business I'd say you're really in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Bag has a nice large "Field Hockey" logo on it. Lies flat on the floor and appears to be water resistant. I'm planning to get a Black-T finish put on the rifle and then not worry about it unless I need it.
I should say I did wuss out and buy the black rather then the hot pink...

I picked up a Wilson Tennis racket bag at Dick's for $20. It holds my AK 47 or AK74 with folding stocks. Has plenty of room for mags even a drum, but I need to fix some straps to hold it all inside.
Very unobtrusive when seen in a vehicle, and won't draw suspicion like a hockey bag in the South.

I also have a Wilson racquet bag for my AK underfolder. But, I have two concerns:
1. The bag is a little flimsy. A yugo UF and a couple of mags probably weighs around 10 pounds - much more than a couple of tennis racquets. Not sure if the racquet bag will take a lot of use as a gun bag.
2. My bag doesn't have much in the way of padding. I'm thinking about getting some foam (maybe a sleeping bag pad) and putting it in the racquet bag. Not sure how I'm going to secure the foam padding in the bag.

I hit the thrift stores in my area looking for bags to hold a couple of rifles unobtrusively. Softball/baseball bags do a pretty good job of holding 1 or 2 carbines, just place a towel in the bottom to offer some padding if it's a cheap one.
On days when I'm heading to the range from the office, I found an amazing padded guitar case for $10, it holds 2 Fals, or a FAL and my 1187, has compartments for shells and mags, and looks innocuous under the bench seat in the cab of my truck. Anyone passing the truck wouldn't see it, unless they're looking closely, and if they do, it makes me look like a hippy....
The only issue I've seen with instrument cases, is that instruments have value at a pawnshop, and any crack/crankhead will break your window to steal one.
