Hey DJ:

my stocks of Clays is getting low!
WHat do you think of Red Dot as a substitute for the Bullseye you have listed? MOre or less?
I have a whole keg of it to use; and loath bying more Clays if I can sub it ;)

Paul..........I just happen to be in the process of loading a big batch of .45's with Red Dot. I'm using 4.8 grains with CCI LP primers and those Penn 230 gr truncs.
I've used this load in the past, it's a decent load. I haven't chrono'd it but it should be in the neighborhood of 750 fps. My Colt Double Eagle loves these loads.

LOL Paul.........When Justin was home last September, we went out to do some shooting. I asked him what he wanted to shoot handgun wise........He said "let me try one of the .45's, I'm tired of a 9 sillimeter." So we took my Double Eagle and Springfield Armory and I made a .45 convert of him. We went through a ton of .45's that week, and I'm just now getting caught up on my reloading.
I have the Square Deal working overtime!

I am loading 5.3 grains of Red Dot under a hard cast 230. I put 7 out of 7 in the X ring at 25 yards using this load awhile back. It is equal to hard ball load. I was having a very good day. I also load 5 grains of Red Dot under a 260 hard cast bullet. The last load is hot but shoots very well. It is also in loading books and was well liked by Elmer Keith. I use a 20 lb spring with that load. Some where I have light loads for a 44 mag using Red Dot.

WST (Winchester Super Target) and Meister 200 grain SWC is my fav for cast. WST and 230 grain FMJ Montana Gold is my fav for jacketed. Lots of good powders for the .45 ACP - I started with WST since I used it for 12 Ga at the time. Tried a few other powders, but never saw a reason to change.

For an easy to shoot target load I use:

200gr FP Rainer plated
5.2g Win 231
WLP primer

I used Unique for a while but 231 meeters much better for me in a Lee auto disk (hey, its cheap and works).

Target load? 3.8 gr of Clays behind a Hensley & Gibbs # 68. Gave me a 3 round cloverleaf offhand from a Baer Thunder Ranch. Entire 5 round group was 1.75" x 1.75". Good load. Oh, what kind of barrel do yo uhave? A Kart seems to like lead and a Bar-Sto seem to like jacketed. A friend of mine put a Baer Premier II in a Ransom. At 25 yards with hardball he was getting 4+ inches. I gave him the H & G # 68 load above with 4.1 gr of Titegroup and he got one hole. (Kart does the interior of Baer's barrels). Makes a difference. If you have a hardball barrel try the Winchester 230 gr. ball. Never used any of the Dot powders.
