View Full Version : Tapco M16 Kit

Just got my M16 kit yesterday. Overall condition is very good. These are definitely all Colt. Every major part has the proper markings. All steel parts appear to have been blasted and reparked at least once in thier life and 95% of that finish is still on the steel parts of this rifle but there is a slight graining of the surface due to blasting (or over blasting). Rust is evident on the sling swivels, butt stock trap door (inside), A2 rear sight and a touch in a small area on the top of the barrel under the handguards. The internals are in excellent condition and show very little wear. The buffer shows a little peening around the edges from contact with the buffer pin but it is all finish damage only. The bolt looks new and has not had more than a couple hundred rounds to it. Same with the carrier with very light wear on the contact surfaces. The inside of the upper is nice with wear on the contact surfaces only.

The upper has about 75-80% of the original finish left, though it has been worn smooth and has faded out to a very blue-gray patina. Actually, I really like the color and I am going to leave it as is and try to create a custom color to apply to a new lower to make it match. I'm even going to abuse the lower to look well used like the upper. No real damage has been done to the upper, just a bit of normal military wear and tear, some dings and scrapes all around the carry handle and wear down to the aluminum on some areas of high contact while used in the field. Overall great condition upper.

The barrel has had surface wear and like I said, it has been refinished at least once but the bore is in immaculate condition, nice crisp rifling and a bright shiny mirror surface with only one slight mar right at the end of the barrel where it looks like something sharp and very hard entered and put a dimple on one of the lands. I'll need to crown this barrel as this mar has deformed a very small area but has made the rifling uneven at the end. I expect it will shoot very well though.

The furniture has seen its share of wear. Scratches mostly but it has cleaned up nicely and there is no damage other than light cosmetic.

I'm sure some kits are going to be in worse condition and some better but this appears to be the average condition right now from all that I have read and a buddy of mine got his kit today and it looks to be near the same condition, though it was still loaded with grease when I saw it. These have been well cared for. All parts were very clean (except where the packing grease had been slopped on for storage/shipping protection). For example, I took the bolt/carrier apart and it has been thoroughly cleaned down to the gas rings. All parts show the same attention to detail. Very nice job, probably made the sarge very happy.

For a military rifle these are in good condition with exterior wear in abundance but internal wear is at a minimum. All Colt parts. Great bore. For well under $300 for a complete Colt parts kit I'd say this is a pretty good buy. Even when you replace the M16 fire control parts & carrier with AR15 parts, permanently attach a brake, render the bayonet lug useless and add the lower receiver you still have a very nicely priced Colt shooter that should perform very well.
I'd get in on this now while you can.

YO, MK!
how do you get all the goop off?

Hey RRotz, hows it goin'?

The goop is a pain but we all know there is a labor of love there somewhere. Nuthin' like the smell of surplus! Intoxicating. I usually don't soak in acetone or spirits if I can avoid it. The cosmo (or whatever grease) on the M16 kits is still pretty viscous, so I just took an old tee shirt, slobbered on a bunch of CLP and went to work wiping it all down very meticulously. Use Q-tips where neccessary and mineral spirits or MEK where needed as well. Run a patch down the bore to shove out the majority of the gunk then bore snake it a few times to reveal the shiny rifling. Strip it all down and lovingly clean it all out and reassemble. It helps if you park it in front of the tube and watch CNN Headline News or something while you perform the sacred "cleaning of the surplus" ritual. Perhaps even softly chanting standard NATO clibers in numerical order and facing due West can help increase the Chi, which if you are favored, will literally melt off Cosmoline with the power of the almighty God-of-Surplus. Or alternatively, you can chuck it all in the parts washer and swirl it around and be done with it in in 10 minutes, but that just seems wrong to me for some reason.

R Rotz: Did you go thru Tapco or FAC? You posted FAC. Any total $ for the complete rifle?

MK, great pics! I see ( I think) a Leapers on there? What kind and how do you like it? Where is the best place to pick one up? How are they in low light? Does the bullet drop comp work well?

Thanks for the info!

What is a good lower receiver for the m16 parts kit? Do you need a colt receiver or will other brands fit on it?

Depends on if they are large or small hole you might need an adapter pin.Otherwise they should all work.
Would be nice to know their front pin diameter.
Anyone?

I got my M16A2 kit from Tapco yesterday.

The bolt and carrier as well as all the other internals are in great shape. Very little use.

Handguards, beat to crap and cracked, unserviceable. Buttsock and pistol grip are worn and scratched but in good shape.

A2 upper. Finish worn off all the high spots but not scratches or dings. A2 sight intact and functioning, dust cover in good shape, forward assist also in good shape.

And the low point, the barrel. Internally cleaned up to bright with no pitting but the outside is a mess. All steel from the front sight base forward is covered in rust, some pitting of the exterior metal of the barrel. One of the front side ears is bent almost straight up.

I'm going to try and return the upper and get something without pitting in the metal and bent parts.

Yup, that a Cheapers, er Leapers alright. I does work well and the BDC actually functions. I had a slight problem with the thing loosening during firing but I fixed it with a simple rubber washer placed onto the screw post. Nice & snug now. Got it for $39 at Tapco. Since this one is the larger diameter 28x4 Leapers, clarity is good and the quality is decent. Have not fired it in low light but playing around the house with it shows it performs about average. It works for me since my commander is not going to be a 600 yard tack driver anyway. But 50-100 yard ranges are a breeze with this scope.

Just a note on the M16 fire control parts & carrier. Took them to the Gun Show yesterday and traded them to a C3 dealer for all AR15 parts in an even trade and he even offered up two USGI Adventure Line 20 Rd mags to boot. The AR15 parts are brand new DPMS and of course the M16 parts are used (slightly) so these parts have turned out to be an outstanding tradeable. Besides, it is best to get rid of them quick I believe.

Now I just need a donor lower. Could not find one at the show that was not over priced. Cheap & used is the goal here since I am going to try and replicate the well used/worn look & color of the upper. I found that I am constitutionally incapable of spending $150-200 on a beautiful receiver just to muck it up. What a world.

METAL,
FAC has forged lowers for 89.95 and cast for 79.95.
Here is their # 763-780-8780 if intersted.

"FAC has forged lowers for 89.95 and cast for 79.95."

"Whose is manufacturing the recievers?"

They are manufactured by Olympic Arms. I ordered 1 from FAC over a month ago. They were on backorder then. Do not know their current status, except I still do not have mine.
