That was part of the assault weapons ban which is federally dead but still exsists in some state aw bans. Where do you live.

There are two situations in which a muzzle device need to be fixed.

1) to lengthen the barrel on a rifle to a MINIMUM of 16" or on a shotgun to a MINIMUM of 18"

2)if you still live in a AW ban state (ie. CA, NY) Check your local laws.

other than that, federal law does not require muzzle devices to be permanently attached.

Did I miss anything?

Your profile says that you live in WA state...

As far as I know, WA does not have any ban along the lines of the now defunct Federal AWB of 1994 (that died a well deserved death in 2004)...

If I'm wrong about WA, I'm sure that someone will be happy to point it out...

There is a third instance. On an imported rifle that is not banned under the law that is part of 922r, attaching a muzzle device, it must be permanently attached and cannot be a flash hider. This is per ATF for a device I put on my CX4 Storm.

without the muzzle attachment you only need 6 US parts, so if you remove it, then youdon't have to worry about the parts count. Only in matters of length does it matter.
