View Full Version : I Realized I HAD to Buy It!

I switched over to Lake City brass and have read that I need to reduce my powder loads 10% to compensate for the different wall thickness. I did that and my semi-autos seemed to fire just fine.
Then, I used a friends Chrony just to see what the muzzle velocities were. OPPS! I was clocking 2250 fps! Too slow! Which may account for the accuracy problems I've been having. Also, now I wonder what my "standard" loads are running using WW brass.
Yep, I just had to get a chronograph so I could fully test my loads. It should be here today or tomorrow. I'm already making up new test loads. C'mon weekend!
Honestly, I had to buy it. It's not just another "toy." And it was on sale at Midway! Sweet!
Do you know how fast your loads are going? I will.

I have had one for a number of years now and they are handy. I hunt mostly with handguns, so I use mine more to work up loads in revolvers. Yep they are nice and you will enjoy yours I am sure! Just don't let friends shoot it:uhoh:

yup.....the chrony takes the guess work out of it.
Have fun Groucho.....don't shoot the chrony or the sky screens.
if they send metal rod to hold the sky screens switch those out with wood dowels of the same diameter and length. Thataway if you should happen
to clip one, it won't blow the side out of the chrony unit.:uhoh:

Should I ask how you know that? Good idea on the dowels.
BTW, when I was range master, I saw a poor guy put one right into the unit! Nobody laughed. We all knew it could have been us making that shot. Stuff happens.

If it isn't a secret, I'd be interested in that load you was using for that low velocity?
Would like to ball-park compare it to loads I'm using. I'm at max according to the gurus. Try to load for accuracy and check head expansion, but these sloppy chambered gas guns make it harder.
I stop addin powder when all the bullets go in the same hole.
Congrats on the Chrony, absolutely ESSENTIAL loadin gear!!:D

I do! :) A chronograph is a Huge aid for a reloader.
FWIW: My Aussie duplication load with Aussie milsurp brass takes about 2 grains less (Varget) to get the same velocity as with commercial .308 brass. 2,700 fps seems about optimum for a 21" FAL, IMO; although my AFF '91 runs either side of 2,750 and is hard to beat.
I think you are supposed to "start" at 10% less and then work up (if using military brass).

Your welcome to ask....No sir, it were'nt me. I was advised by another fella at the range who did it, though. He told me grazed one of the rods and it blew the side out of the chrony unit. I took his advice and bought some dowells.
I did lend my chrony out ONE time. It came back to me with a bullet crease
across the front sky screen. It is still useable but an ugly reminder of what
COULD happen.

No secret here. Using LC brass, M-80 ball ammo, 37gr. IMR 4064 with CCI #200 primer. I don't recommend this load. However, I was glad to see that the standard deviation on the 4-rounds I fired was quite low. At least I'm consistent if not good.
If I didn't say it before, I'm going to check all my loads when the Chrony comes in. Well, I'll probably leave the load I worked up for the Savage alone. It shoots sub m.o.a. at 100 yards. That one ain't broke, so I'm not going to fix it. I'll chrony it, but I'm not messing with the load.

Thanks for the info Groucho. I have data that was found to duplicate milspec 7.62x51 loads and this helped to verify it some what. Your load is quite a bit low so now I see the reason for the velocity your're getting.
I have a load for 30-06 that struggles to do 2200 fps, but cuts cloverleaf groups in a Ruger #1 that has a hard time staying under 2.0" with full power loads.
Another vet, non- seal/sf either. :p
