View Full Version : S&W M29 rear sight
June 17, 2007, 10:21
A friend bought a M29 with a 4" barrel. Model says it is a M 29-2. The whole rear sight is missing. Anyone know offhand what rear blade hieght would go on it. We found a couple cheap sights for sale, but are trying to be sure we can make it work.

Fixed or Adjustable Owl? Do ALL 29/629 Smiths have Adj. Sights?
I can take a Measurement on my 629 IF that might help?

Don't know if this helps, but....measurements from my guns is:
Mod 29-3, 6" -- Rear sight = .175"
Mod 57, 4" --- " " = .152"
Measurement taken with blade in pistol, left side, (staked side), bottom of slot to top of blade.
I believe you need a .146 for a M29 4" but barrel lengths not given in Brownell's book.
They list following .129--.146--.160-- and .222. Think it corresponds with barrels of 2 1/2, 4", 6", and 8 3/8".
Don't know how they measure, but looks like blade only and not the lower dovetail that engages adj. screw.
Hope this helps or I could be full of Horsepoo and not know it.

Thanks guys, we really appreciate the trouble.
I never seen a 29 without adjustable sights, Mike. But that's just me. You know how blind I am in the daylight. Lol
I had the same thought about Brownell's listing, Mainer. Your measurements are quite telling, thanks again.
Mike, is yours a 4" tube ? If so, howzabout measuring it ?

A bit of additional info;
Origional parts list for both N frame Smiths has part no. 5900 for rear sight leaf. Same part used on both 4" and 6" barrels.

Back in the days when gun stores carried S&W accessories, they used to carry one replacement blued and ribbed rear sight assembly that worked on all N frames except the model 28 (flat blue) and model 27 (which was checkered to match the checkering on the rib and topstrap of that model)
God, I miss those days and those shops:cry:
