Tapco and Gunthings.com Izzy HB

Here’s a little write up of the Israeli HB materials that I received from Tapco and Gunthings.com

Tapco: I ordered an Israeli heavy barrel after hearing reviews that they were a very good deal. My HB came well protected and in newspaper and styrofoam peanuts. I paid for the handpick option thinking that I would get an excellent example. Well… I guess I had too high of expectations. The bore was pretty good except for a portion near the muzzle that has pitting. The bore near the chamber has some light frosting but it is acceptable. I could deal with that. What kinda got my goat is that I paid $20.00 for the handpick option and specifically requested that it be judged on bore condition since I’ll be refinishing the outside anyway. When I received the barrel the outside looked pretty good but there was a lot of grime, dust, dirt, etc… in the barrel. I couldn’t see much in there and I couldn’t tell if it was a keeper or not so I took it home and cleaned out all the gunk. The fact that there was so much stuff in the bore tells me that it wasn’t checked “specifically” according to my handpick request. So what I have is:

Outside metal condition: A few “dings” on the sight block that could be taken care of before refinishing. 90-95% park.

Bore: Very light frosting near the chamber and pitting near the muzzle. Overall: At least a Good-low Very Good for 90% of the bore. The disappointment is the last 10% of the bore and the fact that I think they didn’t handpick it according to the bore. I guess this would be an OK barrel if I was making a HB carbine.

I don’t blame Tapco since I know what it’s like to do high volume business and you can’t please everyone all the time. I’ve bought a lot of stuff and have always had very good service from them. The sad part for me is that I’m going to be sending this one back. I wanted to finish off my HB clone soon to show my father when he comes out. Would I still recommend Tapco? Yep. They have cool stuff, very good customer service, offer lots of stuff for the board but every business has a few bumps now and then.

Gunthings.com: This write up will be a little shorter since everything was excellent! I ordered some parts that I didn’t have to go with the Izzy HB above. These included: Izzy buttstock, handgaurds, charging handle, flip up buttplate, BHO device, and bolt. All were excellent/like new or NEW. Everything came neatly wrapped and well protected. Gunthings.com shipping was prompt and they responded well to all my emails. If you’re looking for parts… I would highly recommend Gunthings.com. They’ll be seeing more of my hard-earned paycheck.

All in all… I’m “generally” happy. This just means that my quest for my Izzy HB will continue!

Respectfully,

Sean
