I have been looking around for a red dot site with some magnification and had been kind of disappointed with what was available. The Leupold CQB was a front runner until I found out the dot is gigantic (9 MOA on 1x and 3 MOA on 3x). The Trijicon are very nice, but I still didn't like the large reticles offered. So, last week I get the Botach flyer in my mail box advertising the Aimpoint 3x magnifier for the insanely low price of $380. I jumped on it, and won't be looking back. It works great! I can't wait to take it out to the range.

With the magnifier I get a nice little 3 MOA dot. The Aimpoint mount was solid, but required circumcising the rubber armor on the magnifier. No way was I going to do that. So, the mount went back and I ordered the the Samson flip mount. I am very glad that I did.

Edit for new optical device. See latest posts.

Umm, no you don't. It's still the same exact size in relation to the target, as the target is also magnified 3x. So the dot covers the same MOA amount of the target with or without the mag. It's all relative...

But I also enjoy the Eotech + 3X combo. Or would enjoy it, if I didn't have to send the Samson Quick Flip mount back to them for warranty repair/replacement.

But a very cool little rifle you have there. Wouldn't mind having one of those myself.

Thanks for the clarification. I will have to take out the ruler when I get home test it out.

What happened with the Samson mount? Any inherent problems with it?

Very nice rifle, BTW.

After a few hundred rounds it wouldn't close without first pushing the locking tab down with the other hand (took two hands). Also it would flip open every two or three shots when shooting from an unsupported position.
Hopefully nothing inherent...

Interesting.

You are correct BTW, with the 3x installed the dot still measures 1 MOA relative to the size of the target.

OK, got the mount back. Or actually I think it's a new one.
Anyway, took 13 days counting the day I shipped it. Not bad for international service.
Took it to the range today, works fine once again.

I finally got out to the range yesterday! It really DOES work well. I put about 300 rounds down range without any problems. The 3x magnification capability is a real boon to the holographic dot sights.

I have a had a hard time using the EOTech to keep 60% on a 12" gong at 200 yards (yeah, I'm a lousy shot and the trigger on the FS2000 doesn't help at all). With the 3x I was able to get that up to 90%. Its cool to shoot through a 30 round mags and hear the gong ring 25+ times.

I'm happy.

I've always wanted one of those AUG rifles. Maybe someone can answer this question if any one know the answer:

How come the Australian troops in Iran and Afghanistan are trading in their AUG rifles in for M4s? It seems like they like ours better than they like theirs.

I received a feedback from an Australian soldier who said that AUG rifles gets hot under repeated firing (nothing unusual there) in the plastic stock area that it became uncomfortable to use. Any truth in this?

Kullavan, Don't read too deep into just pictures.... I saw the same pics of the Aussie SF guys with Dimeco [Canadian] M4's . The British also use a special version of the M4. The British have a REAL reason to use the M4 - can you say SA80 ?

p.s. Any stock will get hot in A- stan or Iraq. In Iraq , it gets to + 130 degrees !!!!

Does anyone tried to put an 3x magnifier behind a Aimpoint that has a 2xmagnification?

I have an Aimpoint CompML2 with a fixed 2x magnification.
I'm looking for an extra magnification boost.

So a 3x aimpoint might help?
Or a 3x from eotech, they are cheaper, but does it works?

thanks

Paco

It should work fine. Your best bet would be to call/email Aimpoint. Their CS department is pretty good.

The EOTech 4x works great. I don't know why the 3x would be jsut as good.

Here is an FS2000 with the Aimpoint M4. I haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet but it appears to be a good combination. For FAL Fest I expect to put the M4 and 3X on an FAL. However, I don't really enjoy using optics (for shooting gongs) with the FALs, so it will go back to the FS2000 after the competition.

Oh, yeah, and the getup in the background is what I will be using for the CQB match. I had no idea what to use for the match, and I had a BH vest I bought off the Files for super cheap, so I outfitted it with mag pouches. BTW, a verticle ammo pouch holding 19 rounds of 12 ga is amazingly heavy.

Please tell me that if its OD green is not too Mall Ninja.

Hi Stranger, That looks like a kick butt set up you have. Do you like the Aimpoint better than the Eotech?

As far as EoTech vs. Aimpoint, there is a long story that goes along with it (I won't bore you with all the details). It started with an ad for an Aimpoint 3x at an incredibly low price. It ended with me being stuck with an over-priced, second choice scope.

I like the circle-dot reticle on the EoTech better than anything I have ever used. I was told the Aimpoint magnifier and the EoTech would work great together, but they don't. The Aimpoint 3x magnifier (and its various mounts) don't coax very well with the EoTech. If you don't have your eye in the correct spot you see the top of the hood. The moral of the story is that if you want a magnifier and red-dot then don't try to mix and match. Get the same brand for sight and magnifier.

I like the fact that the M4 can go 80,000 hours on a single battery. That is the best battery lifespan on the market. With the EoTech I was having to replace batteries every couple months. With the Aimpoint, I don't ever have to worry about changing the battery as it has a nearly infinite lifespan. I like that, but it doesn't make up for the lack of circle-dot.

Right now I am trying to decide between buying optics and firearms. If the political winds sway as they have in previous cycles, firearms will be banned but not accessories like optics. When I feel the need I will be buying another EoTech and the EoTech magnifier.

Nah, it's fine, but you definitely need to dirty it up a bit. Clean vests give me the horrors something fierce

I received a feedback from an Australian soldier who said that AUG rifles gets hot under repeated firing (nothing unusual there) in the plastic stock area that it became uncomfortable to use. Any truth in this? .....two fold answer to your questions mate. The M4s are only on issue to our SF (SASR, 4RAR Cdo and CDTs). The reason for this initially was related to the AUGs (or F88 as we cal 'em) issue with working after they have been swimming, for waterborne operations (that these groups do lots of) it was totally unacceptable. In more recent time however the "modular" design of the M4 has been on of its selling points. There is also a "cool SF" thing to some degree I believe. I have stated elsewhere that I believe in most respect the M16 series rifles are a better weapon.

As for overheating...back in the early 90s a soldier here in Sydney (3RAR maybe but I may recall incorrectly) dumped about 120 rounds or more FA and has a catastrophic failure of the receiver, his model good looks were not helped by the incident either . There were all sorts of limits put on sustained FA fire after that. Yes they get hot, lots of that heat dumps up through the optic housing or rail (depending on configuration). I am not sure this is any huge issue though.

I have posted some more on the F88 in another thread on bullpup rifles if you search it out here.

I was looking at the FN the other day. I have a thing for bullpups. I am looking forward to shooting one.

Andy, you would love my vest, little more then a dirty, torn up, patched up nylon rag...

Hey Stranger, I was just wondering how well you liked your Aimpoint setup? I just got my FS2000, and I am pondering what optic to use. Also why did you remove the front sight?

Stranger

I like the Aimpoint as well as the EoTech. They both have positive and negative attributes. I removed the FS for giggles. It's back on now.

With current technology you can't beat nearly 100K hour of operation.

I found at the FAL Fest that I was looking for and using the dot for everything. The 60 MOA EoTech ring didn't help much that I could tell.
