I found CCI #34 primers cheapest at Grafs, but if I had to buy primers locally, and CCI #34's are not available at the store...
---strictly speaking for use in rifles with free-floating firing pins---
I know Federal primers have thin cups, so they're not good.
What about Winchester or Remington large rifle mag. primers?

I substitute CCI 250's because the #34's are supposed to be "magnum" primers.

Use CCI #200 for all my reloading.

I use Remington and Winchester primers for all of my reloading. I use Remington 9 1/2 Magnum primers primarily for my 30-06SPRG and 308WIN loads.
I have been reloading for about 12 years or so on my own. I have owned and shot my Garand since 1992. I have yet to have a single slam fire in any of my firearms.
This slam fire business in my opinion is just more internet nonsense. Much like tumbling live ammo will cause the powder to break down into smaller peices making the pressure spike yada yada yada. Or using reloads in a self defense shooting will result in the earth opening up and swallowing you right after the jury finds you guilty of using extra deadly ammo.
It is just my opinion and you should make up your own mind about such matters.

Slam fires are not "nonsense." It can and does happen. Personally, I think high set primers are more likely the culprit but I use #34 in my Garand loads just in case. I use to use the dreaded Federal primer and did not have an issue in several hundred rounds but why chance it? Military Ordinance researched this and decided to use a thicker primer cup - why not go with that?

Well, there is always a chance that the boogey man really is hiding under your bed.

Government beauracrats do silly things as a normal course of their day in order to justify their pointless existance.

Number 1, there is wwaaaaaayyyyyyy to much crap under my bed for the boogie man to contend with.
Number 2, you can use whatever primer you like. Just keep the rifle pointed in a safe direction (down range) when chambering a round no matter what primer you use. You do see the dimple in your primer when your M1 cycles, right? Again, I think poor priming is more of the issue then cup thickness but I'll keep using #34.
