View Full Version : M4gery, installing Phantom, to cut or not?

So I'm sending my previously naked Bushmaster M4gery barrelled upper out for threading and installation of a Phantom flash hider.

Would you

A) have it cut to 14.x" and the Phantom permanently installed to make it 16" overall.

OR

B) Leave the barrel at 16" and add the Phantom on the newly threaded end, with an overall length of 17.x?

I know "A" will look more authentic, and, well, it's shorter, handier, and will probably look cooler.

"B" will eke a few more (possibly significant) fps out of the .223, plus it isn't permanently attached, so it's easier to change the muzzle device if I choose to do so later. "B" will cost a little less too.

(BTW, anyone have a picture of configuration "B"?)

Your thoughts? Opinions?

14 inches, 16 OAL. you will like it better, the gain in fps is not enough to justify it not looking "right" and being handy.

That's about what I did too. 14.5 + Phantom. It wears an AGOG TA01NSN now.

14.5" with the perm. Phantom is my favorite configuration for a carbine. Here is mine. The barrel started life as an M4 contour but I had it turned down to lighten it up a bit more.

I like the A2 flash hider, so if it were me, I would have the barrel cut it to 14.7" and have the A2 it installed. The Phantom looks cool, but I like the more traditional look of the A2. If you plan on mounting a rail or something else, the permanent flash hider will be a pain if you have to remove the FSB.

Either way, your rifle will look good with the barrel threaded.

If it's legal where you live, I would consider registering it as an SBR and then just threading the flash hider on a 14.5" barrel (after you get your tax stamp, of course). This would let you be flexible if you really wanted to go with a shorter barreled upper on that lower later on.

Just a thought.

That is how I am redoing my M4.
