Got my hand picked g1 kit from tapco and I'm not crazy about the condition of the barrel. Can I use some other metric barrel and still use the quick detach flash hider? I guess it'll have to be bipod cut as well.

Dino,
You need the bbl lug that is on the G1 bbl to stabilize the flashhider. I assume that you could use a non G1 bbl and solder the hider or whatever PC piece to the end, but I don't believe that it would be stable enough to function for you, and besides, that defeats the qd function of the system.

I suppose that someone could weld a comparable lug on someone elses bbl, but, if it were that easy, someone would probably have been doing it before the G1's became available.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Dino,

If the bore is badly pitted, you might
contact Tapco and see about a replacement.
All of my standard G1 kits had some pitting
but throat and muzzles where still tight.
I just built one using the barrel with the most pitting, thinking that if it shot well then the rest would be keepers. I was surprised that it is very accurate.
The most accurate FAL I have owned had a pitted FN made barrel. I sold the barrel because I didn't like the pitting and now wish I had kept it. So you may want to try yours first and see how it does.

I'll second that, my best shooting FAL (thus my favorite) is built from a 125.00 handpicked R1 kit. It has the most amount of pitting of the 6 I own and shoots the best!?!?!

I agree w/ rule .308,
I've got 8 and my 119.00 R1 kit shoot best of em all.try it first before you pitch it

Neither of my standard G1s had noticable pitting. Both bores gauged with minimal throat erosion and seem to have been fired almost not at all. Muzzles were also in good condition.

I ordered early but my kits seem to have come from the second batch, maybe the barrels are better in the 2nd shipment.

From my understanding of match rifles and accuracy concerns, the muzzle crown and muzzle wear are the most important factors that effect accuracy. If the muzzle is worn from cleaning rod abuse and the crown is dinged up it will not shoot accurately. Throat erosion is also a fasctor but less than muzzle condition. I have an old hunting rifle with a pitted bore but it is quite accursate because the muzzle is tight and the crown is good. Try to recrown the barrel on your bad ones and see if that helps them improve. HTH :D
