OK, with all the Galil kits being offered up for reasonable money I've kinda gotten the urge to have one (5.56 version). I'm not planning on building it myself but I'll be buying all the parts before sending them off to the 'smith for the build.
Receivers- can you use an AK variant or does it have to be Galil specific? If Galil specific who has them or do we need to start a campaign to get NoDak Spud to make some?
US parts count. Is it the same as an AK count? Will AK fire control parts work? How about a US made AK grip?
Is there a forum or site out there with gobs of Galil info on it for newbies?
Last, and I realize this is asking a potentially loaded question, but what 'smiths have proven themselves "Galil worthy" for a build?
Thanks for the help folks!

Receivers: Galil specific. ORF is the only game in town right now, but there are IMI's floating out there.
Parts Count: Same as an AK. Most use FCG's, pistons and muzzle devices.
Smiths: Gunplumber built mine out of an Israeli thumbhole. Great rifle. I have seen pictures of what Big 50 does, and they looked great.
Go for it. The kits are cheap right now, and the ORF receivers are working. You can probably get it done a lot cheaper than a G3 or FAL right now.

Century and Military Gun supply have advertised them recently. A good source for things Galil is the Uzi Talk board. Scroll down, and they have a whole forum devoted to Galil. At the top there is a sticky for Galil suppliers. Start there.

SGN:TDWSales (Rav) lists them for $299. as well as SARCO at $295 and the ARM at $325. Both sources sport new US made barrels.

The AK files listed at the top of the page has a whole Galil section here (http://www.akfiles.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=10)

there are also step by step photo documentry on my website under the "notes" section.
Initial inspection of the "new" ORF receiver is promising. Hopefully, I'll get her done in January.

Awaiting...
I am very interested in knowing your assessment of the geometry and HEAT TREAT of the ejector, as this last seemed to be deficient in the past.
I want a Galil...but I want it to last!

I have heard that the Galil can be built at a 7.62x39mm. I have plenty of .308's and lots of 7.62x39. I would like something of this quality to shoot it in. Any chance of building it so that standard AK mags will fit? I dislike guns that take big buck mags!

Everyone seems to be forgetting the other choice when it comes to building a Galil, or Sako clone and that is the Norinco or Polytech Hunter Rifles. These guns had a forged Galil, Sako , Valmet style reciever. I traded the last one I had for a mini 14 for my father in law because he had a shoulder surgery and can not shoot anything that has any recoil any more. The one before that I used to build a Valmet clone. They can be often times depending on condition be had for $350 to $400 I would consider it an option as it is a very nice reciever with no bugs.

I thought, as Norinko is a Chinese company, that they are illegal to import into the USA??
I was looking at getting one of their m14 clones, but discovered that I would have to move to canada to get one.
Does anyone have backup on this or am I full of Shite??

Capt Phil Norinco hasn't been able to import anything since the Clinton era or before, However abefore that time they were importing and as such those guns are available and can be sold, traded etc. You just have to find one.
