AS A NEW MEMBER I NEED SOME FEED BACK ON A PROBLEM. I RECENTLY ALMOST FINISHED BUILDING OF MY LONG AWAITED G-1 FAL KIT FROM TAPCO. THE USUAL PARTS FITTING. AS WHOLE THE PARTS WENT IN WITH NO MAJOR PROBLEMS. UNTIL IT CAME TO THE HEADSPACING. WELL WITH ( 2) PREVIOUS BUILDS ONE STG-58 ON A IMBEL AND ONE L1A1 ON A HESSE. I THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE HESSE UNIT ANOTHER TRY. PREVIOUS RECEIVERS LOCKING SHOULDERS CAME IN AT .262 AND .268 . THE KIT CAME WITH A .262 SO I GO TOO SET THE HEADSPACE STICK MY .262 GAUGE PIN WON'T CLOSE ON A GO GAUGE. LONG STORY SHORT WENT DOWN TO A .253 STIL NO GO ON A GO.WELL THAT WAS MY SMALLEST PIN SIZE IN MY COLLECTION. RESORTED TO CUSTOM SIZING A PIN IN THE CLOSE POSITION AND CAME UP WITH CLOSE ON A GO. TOO MY SURPISE A .203 . NOW MY QUESTION? IS THIS TO EXTREME FOR A LOCKING SHOULDER AND ARE THERE ANY SAFETY ISSUES HERE. OPTION AND ADVISE NEEDED.  [QUOTE [/QUOTE] JILLIDGE@PRODIGY.NET

This doesn't sound right.
You sure the chamber is clean? no burrs?

Who made the barrel? Is it possible that the barrel is an Inch one. If it is metric and you back the barrel out one full turn (1/16 of an inch or .0625) and put a breeching washer on it to fill the space, this would put you in the ballpark. .203 + .0625 = .2655

Turn off your caps lock. Did you remove the extractor before trying to headspace?

hsp223's suggestion sure sounds plausible.
But, I thought the G-1's were all metric pattern.
Can somebody who has their kit handy please take a look at the barrel shoulder, and tell us how many flats the shoulder has? In my limited experience, inch has four flats, metric has two flats. Does the G-1 kit come with a breeching washer between the barrel and the receiver stub?

The G-1 is properly a FAL-Canada, modified as required by the FRG. They do not have breeching washers. Subsequent 'Metric' rifles incorporated the sight line, AND other modifications. This became the definitive Metric 50.00.
Even the Belgian M-1 is NOT a 'Metric'.

Hey you guys, Thanks for the input as a follow up to your question at hand. Type gauges use for Go and No-Go from Forster in 1.6300 - Go and 1.6340 for No-go. Yes chamber was double check for obstruction and cleaned. G-1 barrel is metric and timed TDC with a little barrel shoulder releif for go measure. All in all it looked to be text book build. For a moment I forgot it was a Hesse receiver, until my head space night mare. The breaching washer Idea sounds like an easy fix . Will that cause any feed problem down the road? everthing else is OK. And the pin gauges were bought at MSC Industrial supply company in zz-type plus size . I now have sizes .244 thur .270 I hope this is of some help. Thanks again and open to any more suggestions.
