so I have a flatop ar that I want to turn into a varminter, how hard is it to unscrew the current barrel and screw on the new one? What tools are needed? If I had a shop or someone do this how much would it realistically cost? Thanks a mill

You need a receiver clamp and a barrel nut wrench.
You'll need to remove the gas tube first, then the barrel should unscrew pretty easily. To re-install, you tighten and loosen the nut a couple of times and then torque it on until the nut times at an opening for the gas tube. Re-install the gas tube and confirm the timing from inside the upper receiver.
Its about a 10~15 min job.

You will also want to check headspace

hmmmmm
thanks for the info, I didnt think it was too tough, just dont have to tools as of yet....

hey Matt... do you have any varminter upper halves laying around in your workroom-o-goodies? How much do you think it would run if I save all my christmas pennies? (It is nice to have a birthday and christmas together... though it did stink when I was a kid!)

Thanks!
