How long of an OAL can you load your rounds and have them fit in your FAL metric mags? I load an OAL of 2.84" for my FN SPR, and it is definately too long for the mags I've got. Anybody able to load them over 2.80"?

Not an issue for me. Using 147grfmj amd crimped in the cannulure they are the right length to fit mags.

Reliability with mag. fed firearm outweights any small advantage gained by seating bullet closer to bore.

On bolt guns I seat bullets into the lands for target or bench rifles. On hunting rifles, I make sure bullets are not touching the lands.

I expected that you'd get more answers here than have shown up so far...

I don't know what the real answer is...

I load all of my FAL .308/7.62mm NATO to a COL of 2.795" max...

I've never had any problems.

For what it's worth...

Yeah, I expected more replies as well. I suspect most guys shoot surplus ammo. However, what with the drying up of quality surplus, I bet there will be more guys reloading soon. Once my Stg58 arrives, I'll let you guys know the answer to this question.

shorter than an M14 mag

I dug out some of my old M14 handloads the other day, and I ended up having to single-feed them in the FAL, 'cause the were too long for my metric mags.

My OAL for the FAL (STG58) was 2.826" (71.8mm). Still fitted the magazine and no feeding problems.
