At the suggestion of someone on this board, I filled in the rear peep with solder, filed it down, and re-drilled a smaller hole. I then painted the solder black. The result is a smaller hole to give me better accuracy hopefully.

I gotta bring this one up to the top. I'm not enjoying my L1's humungus rear peep hole at all. If I bring my L1 with me to go shooting along with a bunch of other rifles with smaller holes, like my AR and M1 Carbine, I can't seem to aquire the target as well. That forces me to go shooting with only one gun if I want to shoot my L1 that day, which can be boring.
Was it regular solder that someone suggested to kanewtervalve here, or was it silver solder?

It would seem to me anything stable will do, solder or epoxy. You don't want it to fall out under recoil or handling, you don't want it to react to cleaning solvents. I would venture silver solder would be VERY stable, if maybe a little more than you need. Nothing wrong with overkill in this regard.

My L1A1 has 2 apetures. one is a huge peep that I assume is for close range/low light and the other is a smaller one that is flipped up and used thru the larger one. Only set up like this I have even seen. It's from the early Century imports right after the crime bill was passed.

Sounds like you have a British Hythe Sight on your rifle, I'll trade you a standard issue L1A1 rear sight for it, heck I'll even pay shipping both ways ;)

Thanks, but I think I'll keep it. I am assuming they aren't common? If you can shed some light on it please do.

What kind of drill did you guys use to make the hole in yours? I tried to drill a smaller hole at the same height as a metric sight so I could have a folding rear sight on my STG. I barely made a dent in the metal, and went through two bits before I gave up.

timg953, the Hythe sight was originally designed to be used with a Low visability front sight, with a tritium insert. They are found on occasion (I have one as well ;)).
FNnuts, you can go a couple of different routes here. You can heat up the sight blade, which will relieve the temper of the metal, then you can drill it. I don't recommend this, as you won't be able to apply the original/correct temper.
The other option is a carbide drill bit. Be careful using these, as they can and will break easily. If you are using a hand drill, you need to be very steady, sideways movement will break them.

Sounds like you need my FAL match site. I'm working out final production stuff. See http://www.guntech.com.
